Have you ever tried a Rye IPA beer?

I tried the ruthless rye from sierra nevada and the wookie jack black rye ipa from firestone walker.

both great brews, i highly recommend them

Rye of the Tiger from Great Lakes is tasty... Great Divide has a Red Rye Lager that is good. Really good.

Magic Hat's Ticket to Rye was good.

I tend to try all beer Rye when I see them. I made a great RyePA homebrew... I should brew it again.

They all sound worth a try. My first experience with rye malt was from local brewpub. A very rye heavy amber ale. I like the spicy bite it adds. I think it would be quite an addition to an IPA.

Cheers, Todd

What would you all say the defining characteristic of a "rye" IPA would be (flavor wise)? Is there one?

Huh. I'm a Firestone fan, but I haven't seen that around these parts yet. Sounds interesting.

After hearing how great FW beers are, i've been looking everywhere. finally the local whole foods got some and i got that one and the double jack IPA. Amazing!

Terrapin is hands down my favorite brewery. Its located in Athens GA, which is about 2.5 hours from me. For what its worth, the beer you referenced is not an IPA, its just a Pale Ale. The distinction there is that an IPA (India Pale Ale), has a bolder hop profile, higher alcohol and is generally more robust. The Terrapin Rye Pale Ale is an awesome beer.

Rye tends to lend a spicy profile to beers, and is very popular combined with lots of hops. If you are in the South East, Sweetwater has a Rye IPA called LowRYEder IPA, which is an awesome beer too.

That was sloppy of me - thanks for the correction! And yes - I totally agree with everything you say. I hope to see more Terrapin beer in my area.

Where are you located Dreadpirate? Like I said, they are based out of Athens, GA, and until recently were a regional brewery distributing to SC, NC, GA, and probably VA, AL and TN, but I've never been to those places to look for it. The Rye Pale Ale is their flagship beer and is starting to become available a lot of places outside of the Southeastern US.

Maryland. Terrapin had a rep at "The Perfect Pour" giving out samples. Anyone who bought a six pack got a free beer glass as well.

I stopped by a local boutique beer & wine shop after work last week and ended up finding a bomber of the Wookie Jack. Will have to give it a spin soon.
