What's new

Hate to say it but I'm starting to like these Bic razors.

I've been using Bic Comfort 3 Advance disposables for about four weeks now and have gotten some of the best shaves I've ever had. I've been a strict DE shaver for more than a year now, along with a brief stint with a GEM Micromatic. I've always had an area on my lower neck that was irritated no matter which razor or blade comb I used, but since using the Bic razor the redness and irritation has almost complete disappeared. I use very light pressure and still use a brush along with soap or cream to create my lather. I gave DE razors the old college try but it looks like they'll be moved to the back of my dresser drawer. I know some guys will consider what I've said complete blasphemy but it's hard too continue using something that's not working for me. The time spent using a DE, along with adding a brush to build lather, has greatly improved the results I'm finally getting now.

:yikes:

I'm one of the few cartridge razor supporters out here (I use either DE or a cartridge razor, depending upon my schedule, mood, etc.), but even I'm having a hard time accepting the disposable as a viable daily alternative.

I personaly think its a case of finding what suits you. No one should DE or Straight shave because they think its better.. Im starting to think that pre and post shave treatments make up 70% of the shave if its the bic that works for you dont fight it.

Im out to find the best shave for me, whatever it turns out to be I dont mind! It does seem like DE is for me, im yet to try SE though!

I received a PIF Atra and blades from slantman today. I'll be using it in the next couple of days and will let you know how it works out. The idea of using disposables on a daily bases is hard for me to swallow also, so I'm hoping that the Atra impresses me.

I'm sorry. I don't want to hijack this thread, but I just threw in a Grateful Dead CD and I'm listening to Dark Star and I log in to B&B and bam... there's Jerry.

Mad props for a cool avatar.

Similar experience recently... got a pack of yellow-handled Bic Sensitive shavers. Was blown away. Damn near as close as a feather blade and without the harshness.

It'll never feel as good in my hand as a proper DE but it's in the rotation for now since you can't turn away a good shave, which is really why I got into this stuff in the first place. Sucks that it's so wasteful though.
+1 to technique and prep being improved post-DE, that's where a lot of the difference is made

+1 on the Bic Sensitive. It is no DE but I use them once a week when I sleep in or am in a rush. They are only good for one (maybe two) shaves though.

I keep a pack of CVS sensitive skin disposables on hand. Use them for touch up work under the nose, bottom lip and on the chin. I used the disposable exclusively for about three weeks on the journey from SuperFusion to SuperSpeed. I think the SuperSpeed shaves better overall but the disposable comes in handy when I really need to see what is going on.

I'd like to jump on the "Do what works" bandwagon.

For me, personally, the more blades my razor had the more irritation I got, and I always needed two passes anyway. So first I stuck to the Trac-II to avoid having to use a high-blade-capacity semi-automatic assault razor, and now that I've gotten into DE razors and the like I seem to be getting less and less irritation every day.

That said, it's YOUR freaking face man! Nobody else here is dragging the blade across it! So do what works best and don't feel bad about it!

If stuff like the Bic is working well for you but you don't want to waste all the plastic think about trying a Gillette Sensor or some two blade cartridge. Those are pretty gentle and all you throw away is the cartridge not the whole thing. I use the Sensor when I travel and get pretty good results. I can't use the three blade systems.

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

The goal: a great, comfortable, enjoyable, irritation-free shave.
How you get there: YMMV. :w00t:

Wait a minute. (Use Ralph Kramden voice here) Wait a minute! I'm clearly a newbie so I'm probably speaking a bit out of line but I thought the whole point here was to espouse the virtues of wet shaving with either DE or Straights. Now don't get me wrong, I say to each his own but have I been led a bit astray, and bought a bunch of razors, and given a gallon of blood, when I didn't need to? Could I have just bought the correct chemicals and continued with my Mach 3? Talk me off the ledge here please.

I guess I thought it was about finding what works for you and wet shaving means your not using an electric and the "wet" part means the razor of choice and the lather of choice. So that can mean whatever type of razor works the best for your particular skin and face. And the wet means some type of shaving cream. Some still prefer the can goo but who am I to judge. While others prefer soaps or creams or even the brushless stuff.

It's a one size fits all forum.

But that's great that you have found the razor that works best for you !!!
After all YOUR shave is all about YOU and not us.

Wait a minute! ...I thought the whole point here was to espouse the virtues of wet shaving with either DE or Straights.

We all have different faces, and slightly different approaches to shaving. Some folks will inevitably find that they are getting fine shaves with a cart or disposable, perhaps after switching to a brush and shaving soap or cream, or after improving their pre-shave routine.

For the record, I rarely shave with a DE, and I've never used a straight--I love my Injectors.

VonM --

Yes, the vast majority here embrace the traditional wet shave. With a modest effort and a little experience, the shaves with a str8/DE/SE are unsurpassed. For the most part, you'll find that those still embracing the disposables/cartridges are relatively new to wet shaving. I used up my cartridges before committing to a DE and later an SE.

Guys who have made the transition rarely return to the cartridges/disposables except for travel. It's a personal choice and all are welcome to B&B. The heresy of touting disposables may subject someone to a little teasing, but no one is going to be burned at the stake. It sounds like Kevtex has found a solution for his shaving.

Based solely on performance, I would shave with Mach3's in a heartbeat. They're easy, widely available and (for myself at least) give a decent shave in one pass.

However, adding together the cost factor, environmental concerns, some retro cool factor, the challenge of learning a new skill, etc. DE shaving wins out in the end.

I am also a newbie, so my input is only based on limited experience here. I have heard several times that the focus in this community is to help get that perfect shave. This is done by enlightening people about the benefits of traditional wetshaving. That does not mean exclusively use of DE safety razors or straights. The other tools used in prep and after treatment are also very important.

I have seen some people here using injectors, cartridges, and others plain DE's. Buying copious amounts of razors was perhaps not a financial plus, but it did give your experience. As others here have noted, proper technique and a good prep will help your shave along immensely. I speak from experience. It is not just down to the razor.

Going back to a multi-blade system from a DE after learning all of the proper lather and shaving tips has yielded extraordinary results for certain members here too.

But if you took an honest poll of all the B & B members and asked them what style of razor they preferred I can almost guarantee the majority would say DE or SE. That's just the nature of this site. The thing is, I've never checked out any sites that tout the virtues of disposables and cartridges as the premier shaving experience. Those sites may be out there but I just don't have interest in them because I thought there was something unique about SE and DE so I choose to come here and choose to try and make my way with those types of blades. Again, to each his own but if this is mainly a DE and SE community then why doubt ourselves? Preach on in favor of these blades I say!
