Has Son's of Anarchy Jumped the shark?

Big fan since the first episode, but this season's opener just didn't do it for me. I think the writers have let the success of the twists and all of the subplots go to their head, and they are taking themselves too seriously. There just seems to be too many agenda's going on with all of the characters for me to keep up with. In the middle of watching the second episode, I realized that there are better shows to invest my time in- So disappointed.

On a happy note, I've just discovered Breaking Bad:w00t:

Haven't watched past episode two but this is the second to last season this is pretty much all planned. I don't think they are so much jumping the shark as they are just making as many waves as they can to make as much money as they can.

The same thing happened to Lost. First season or two was good then the writers started smoking stronger stuff and the characters were time traveling. It just got crazy.

I really like the cast. Katy Sagal really pulls the show together for the male leads. Charlie Hunnam is a fine actor and I like his work but lets face it, Jax would get eaten alive by all the old bikers I have ever met. I thought the whole we're-sneaking-to-Ireland-under-the-nose-of-the-FBI was pretty far fetched. Then they took out an FBI agent agent and Chibs spat on the corpse of the IRA informer. Really? Leave DNA evidence at a double murder scene? I watch all the episodes after they arrive at Netflix so I can catch up on a season pretty fast. Whenever I see a thread asking about a show jumping the shark I always get a bit antsy about it. It usually means there is at least a chance they are overdosing it.

Same thoughts here starting last season...
It is over the top. It's a soap opera w/ guns, boobs, bikes and leather.
As long as you accept it for that, I think you can still enjoy it.

It is not a realistic show (what is?) so yeah, the pretty boy head of the club looks nothing like the biker dudes you run across pretty regularly around these parts. The actors are just that. Really the same could be said for anything on TV - even reality shows aren't real.

I do like that they use real town/cities in their storyline (besides Charming) - Stockton, Oakland, Reno, etc...
That lends it an element of realism. Visually, It looks like it all takes place in Northern California which follows the story-line.
That adds to the appeal for me.

The 'biker gangs' are serious business in California (extending to Nevada, Oregon, etc). Recently there was shoot-out in a casino in Reno. This wasn't a off the beaten path Tribe owned casino. IIRC, it was one of the cornerstone franchises, similar to what is in Vegas. Actually may have been 2 separate incidents - can't keep it straight b/c it happens often enough...the President of the San Francisco Hell's Angels was killed a few years ago in outside a bar in the City by a member of the Mongols...there was an actual shoot-out in Vegas several years back during a big 'motorcycle convention'... so maybe the show isn't that far-fetched after all.

P Funk, right you are. Absolutely, Hollywood has never followed reality. As an internet joke once said; Mr. Sheen, you are not really the president. You just play one on TV.

Your points are well made. And yeah, the biker gangs are a different breed from the 'bikers' I used to know in my younger days. These were just old rough house bike riders who would fight a circular saw if you jacked with them. They would also buy you a beer and actually be pretty friendly if you behaved yourself around them. Which is why they weren't clubbers. Not mean enough to humans in general to qualify.

Cheers, Todd

I think they've gone ahead and just dove right in. I wasn't a big fan of how this past season opened. I felt it played on too much as far as real world recent events.

The show has this season and next to make the rest of its money. The writers and producers certainly aren't wasting any opportunity.

I was already annoyed by the biker wannabes walking around with the Sons of Anarchy (your state here) hoodies and assorted merchandise.

What really did it in for me was when I got the latest Cigars International catalog. Sons of Anarchy branded cigars, "Inspired by the FX hit drama." Right below it are Black Crown cigars. The exact same smokes, only without the hoaky novelty branding. And $10.00 cheaper to boot!

Yeah, I'll still watch it. The adventures of the dynamic duo of Chibs and Juice are always entertaining. Tig has some very classic moments as well. If anything else, those three need to have more hilarious misadventures.
