What's new

Happiness is a Warm Barberpole . . . .

I love my Gillettes (Red Tip, no-date SS, Aristocrat, and Tech, to name a few), I really do, and there is something quite compelling about shaving with a finely wrought instrument that is even older than I am (as I quickly approach the half-century mark). However, every time I return to my first DE razor, a brand new Merkur 38C Barberpole, loaded with a Derby blade, I get a wonderful, easy, BBS shave. No, it's not as sexy as a TTO loaded with a 7 O'Clock Yellow but, for me, in it's own way, it is nevertheless a more rewarding tool. I wanted to be one of the boys -- I wanted my answer to be the Gillettes -- and, while I have no intention of abandoning them, the truth is, I can do a better job, with less effort using the Merkur.

If the chips were down, and I really needed a perfect shave, I would have to go with the Merkur. I can shut off my brain and just shave, knowing the rusult will be superlative. For me, for whatever reason, every other razor I have used requires more thought in order to get the job done -- either because it is too aggressive and I fear permanent disfigurement, or because it is not aggressive enough and I have to do a multitude of passes to get a decent shave. The Merkur just fits me in a way that the Gillettes, try as I might, do not. With the Merkur I can just relax and "let it happen.".

There, I've said it. Now I feel much better.

Disclaimer: I am neither suggesting that the Merkur 38C is the answer for anyone else, nor attempting to invalidate anyone else's shaving decision. I am merely stating my own personal conclusion, which applies only to me. Thank you for your support.

While reading your post I kept wondering who the guy in your avatar is? It's at the tip of my tongue... Can't stop thinking about it.

Agreed. While the 38C is too big and heavy for my needs, the other fixed head Merks really work well for me.
The nostalgia of the Gillettes is attractive, but they don't deliver the results I was hoping for (withthe possible exception of the Slim :001_smile).

I agree completely. I tried a Superspeed, and while nice, was just way too mild for me.

Ironically, it was so mild that, like you, I had to do extra passes to get the closeness that I'm used to with my Merkur HD, that I actually got quite bad irritation on my neck!

I think the secret to a great shave is to get maximum closeness in minimum passes, and the Merkurs seem to work far better for this, for me.

The HD/Barberpole are just right in terms of aggressiveness, which I guess is why they're so popular with beginners!

Shouldn't this go in the confessional :)

I'm of the same opinion. I want to like my ss better, but my hd just gives me a better shave.

+1, but if you want just as close a shave requiring even less attention, try Müle's 2009 R89. This thing's practically fault free and for my mileage, shaves every bit as close as a Merkur. But I do agree, I haven't found a Gillette yet (as cool as they are) that will get me as close as easily as my R89.

I haven't yet tried a Muhle, but it is my intention to do so, and when I do, I will make the R89 my first stop.
