All this talk about "a gentleman is never without one"... let me tell ya, I've met alot of people at home in Alabama that are far from what most of you would call "gentlemen" or "ladies" and quite a few carried the standard issue handkerchief tucked into the back pocket of their pants for daily use.
My dad carries the red (what I call railroad engineer style) one in the backpocket for utility purposes and often a nicer white hanky for cleaning his glasses if/when they get sweat/dirt on then.
