Hand orientation?

I spent this entire month saving exclusively with straights:001_cool:. I have been working on my honing, stropping as well with a New Dovo and a few antique store finds. They have passed hht, and yet when I shave, I get some inconsistency. I will start with a great N-S path, sideburn down on the right side, but when I try the same on the left(other side of blade) it pulls?? It seems like one side of the blade is duller. Is this possible? Can hand orientation cause favoritism while stropping?

Anyone else ever experience something similar?

Thanks,
Ken

I think only a honemeister or someone more experienced than me can answer this one...

There's this thing where uneven honewear is a sign of a warped blade. If the blade is warped, you would get that ok feeling on one side and not so good on the other...

Blade-angle is a possibility. To me, a good shave should feel kinda prickly but smooth, from the hairs being cut and the glide of the blade. If you're getting inconsistent shaving, it could be due to the way you hold the razor. For added stability, I keep one hand on the heel of the blade and the other on the spine of the razor to help guide it and to keep a proper blade-angle. A bit unconventional, maybe, but it's worked well for me.

Thanks guys. I was thinking it may just be the dominant hand holding the razor better, for lack of a better term. I`ll try the two handed hold for left side next time and see if that fixes it.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing until I shaved while wearing my contact lenses instead of my glasses.
It became clear that I was using a larger blade angle, so I started doing my left side with the spine against my cheek until it worked like the right side.

Well, it seems this new Col Conk(Dovo) is totally asymmetrical. It seemed to pull more than the other razors, especially on the left side. I finally had time to sit down this weekend and try taking it to the hones. Something was off, upon closer inspection,(..these are loafers) I noticed looking down the spine it was like a crooked tear drop instead of the normally symmetrical tear drop shape.
Is this repairable or do I try to send it back?

If the blade is twisted, that's no good... I would send it back.

Yup...get that thing back to Dovo for round 2. You spend too much money on these blades to get a stinker when its brand new....although I would post pics before you send it (if you can post pics that show your concern) to get the masses to weigh in on the evidence.

Dovo seems to have issues with getting their razors shave ready on account of many similar threads on this forum. If you are looking for a new Dovo, I think I can safely recommend getting it from RasurPur since Martin Nienberg seems to hone it before sending it to you.

Edit: with closer inspection they are not specifically Dovo's but just like them they are made in solingen.

It took many tries to get these pics. Hopefully you can see what I am talking about.- I really need a newer camera.

Yes, your above description fits the picture really well. i would not know what to do about it except send it back and get a refund or another razor. Good Luck!
