Haiti Challenge

Fellow B&B members...Tonight my wife and I made a $50 donation to the Haiti Relief Fund. I would ask that everyone make a donation to the fun or a fund of your choice. The suffering in this country of such a poor population such a short distance from our shore is a human tragedy. I am touched by the outpouring of our country and others. I know in this time of recession times are hard for everyone but even in our hard times we are so blessed. My wife is unemployed and things are hard all around for everyone but for the grace of god. I am always so proud of our country that when a tragedy strikes we rise up as a people and extend a helping hand. I ask if you can match my contribution please do so, if you can give a smaller amount please do so even $5 is such a blessing to those who have nothing.
Thank You.

We just made a $50 donation too, but only after searching for an organization that really does send most of the money where it's needed. Unfortunately, many larger organizations (Red Cross, USAid) pay huge salaries to fundraisers and other execs. We found one started by Julie Andrews that sends 98% of the money it receives to the people who need it. Here's their url:

Great reminder I donated at the website for the televised fundraiser they had last night.
I hope that the funding is not too used up by administrative fees.

Please do support whatever charity or service organizations you are comfortable with.

Thank you-

My Immediate Supervisor encouraged me to spend some time searching for organizations that we could depend on NOT to spend a significant portion of our donation on administrative overhead (i.e.: National Office salaries and the like). As with most questions, I discovered that I didn't need to look far or long. The first two organizations I researched are old favorites of ours for charitable giving: The Salvation Army and the United Methodist Committee on Relief. As far as I can determine, both outfits will spend 100% of our donation on actual Haitian relief activities, and none on "overhead".

Then came the decision, in which both of us participated. At her suggestion, we sent $100 to each. We intend to donate $100 / month for the next several months, likely continuing the 50/50 split.

As an aside, on Friday I finally thought to ask one of my teammates at work (a 30 year old who has a slight French accent and who told me during the initial interview, "No, I don't speak French, but I can listen French.") if he had any family in Haiti. He reported that "several" of his wife's cousins had lost their lives in the earthquake, and many others had been injured. That information brings the horrible situation even closer to home!
