Hair Tonic Heaven

because of this thread, i just recently took delivery of an assortment of hair tonics, and I love them. this is just what i needed. work great with my coarse and wavy hair. i don't need strong hold and pommade is usually a bit too much for me, unless i am well overdue for a haircut.

thanks for the tips.

by the way, Atlanta Barber Supply is great. inexpensive, great packing job and lightning fast delivery.

report on what you like after you have had a chance to experiment

so far, so good.

so far i have taken the Beau Kreml for a lenghty test drive, and it is great. light, nice, pleasant scent (heard it described as having a gin and tonic note). makes my hair feel soft, just a little hold, which is all that i need. This is definitely a keeper

have tried clubman once; similar results; like this one

lucky tiger 3 purpose: a strange, fruity, chemically scent, but not offensive. a little oily; need to give it some experimentation

jeris with oil -- one use so far; seems too oily at my short length now, but i can see how it might be a good choice when my hair is longer and a bit too wavy, etc. will experiment with this one too

eau de quinine -- on backorder

jeris w/o oil-- haven't tried it yet

i think i bought another one; cannot think which one it is
haven't tried it yet

for me, tonic is perfect; my hair is thick, and the strands are coarse; wavy; gets a brillowy effect when it's too long; tonic makes it feel softer, a little shinier, and lays down more than usual, which i like.

thanks, great report I should try hair tonic. I have been using a lot of different pomades that I really like.

I like eau de quinine as an afershave.

Has anyone tried vaseline hair tonic?Ive been using it for a while now and i get great results,it is basicaly just oil and the scent is....well vaseline you know that kinda medicinal scent.I have really fine short hair and it has a tendency to get really dry and itchy but just a little bit of it in the morning with a military brush gives me hold all day long and no itchyness or dandruff. Its also dirt cheap lol

RutgersFootball- would you be willing to describe the Beau Kremel's scent? Does it smell similar to any of the other products you ordered?

Kreml doesn't smell like anything else I have tried.

Here is a description I found on the web that sounds about right:

A great classic hair tonic of the 1940/50s. Don't use water - use Kreml

The "Beau Kreml Men's Hair Tonic" was named just "Kreml" until the late 1940s. It gave a nice hold for the whole day, removed dandruff scales and checked excessive falling hair. Besides it provided a refreshing lime-gin-lavender-grapefruit fragrance under a man's hat. It leaves no oil stains.

eau de quinine came in last week: that stuff is very nice.

so far the beau kremyl, edq, and clubman are my favorites out of my first hair tonic order.

Yes, I have some Vaseline hair tonic. I use it the same way you do, with a military hair brush. I like it a lot. It gives a great shine and for just being mineral oil it's not greasy at all like I thought it would be. Also, it has a lot better hold than I thought it would.

You are lucky because if I'm not mistaken it is still available in Europe in stores. In the U.S. I can only get it online and it is from some small company that bought naming rights and remakes it so it is a little expensive.

I like eau de quinine as an aftershave.

EdQ does make an excellent aftershave. I tried it after Clubman Rob mentioned it way back in this thread. It certainly is a cool weather scent--but the drydown is wonderful after a couple of hours-the scent is extremely pleasant. Plus like other Pinaud products it leaves the face feeling fantastic.

If you're already using it in your hair, try a little splash after your next shave. Bet you'll like it!

all the best,

Marty E.
