Hair Care for Oily Hair

Hello their dudes, just wanted to ask for any advice you might have.

I have long hair, a little past my shoulders, and I love it. I feel that long hair suits my face best. The only problem is that it tends to be really really oily. This is a problem that I've had way before I let my hair grow out. I tend to wash my hair every other day as well as apply conditioner to. The shampoo that I'm using currently is of the Suave brand. It says for oily hair on it. It hasn't been much help though.

What are you're guy's thoughts on what I should do? It looks nasty when it's all oily haha

This is what I have used the past several years: http://www.google.com/products/cata...og_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CGoQ8wIwBQ#

I have oily, fine hair (not thinning), and this adds body and makes it feel clean. I do have shorter hair than you describe and shampoo every day. But my feeling is that this is an upgrade over Suave. It's not all that expensive.

Have you tried tea tree oil shampoo? My hair's not oily, but this shampoo has been great for my hair. There is also a conditioner, and neither is very expensive. Might be worth a try. :thumbup1:

If you want to experiment a bit, see the wiki page on shampoo bars. Could be your problem is SLS in your shampoo.

Those shampoo bars look interesting, and promising! I never knew about about shampoo bars. I'll be sure to give these a try. The J.R. Liggett's looks like it could be good and is around $6-$7 on amazon.

Thanks for the suggestions, all of you!

I've had extensive experince with Chargin Valley and highly recommend theirs. They have several different formulations including one for oily hair. But, I think any SLS-free shampoo will help with that problem. CV also has a guide to what bar will work best for you (tho they're all great). Rose of Sharon Acres's are also very good, but more limited in selection. However, they add goat's milk to theirs which is very mild and good for the skin/scalp.

I have fairly oily hair, and shampoo and conditioner only made it worse. If I washed every day it was dry and frizzy, and if I washed any less than every other day it was gross from the oil. I just use diluted baking soda and vinegar now. My hair takes a lot longer to build up oils now so its never overly oily, but is never stripped like with regular shamoo either. Its crazy cheap to boot.

I do have oily hair, it seems to be seborrhoeic dermatitis but I don't have all the symptoms. I'm using Tea Tree Invigorating shampoo by Giovanni. It does work, the dandruff seems to be gone, so I'm almost sure that my dandruff is caused by a yeast or fungus. The shampoo removes the oil from my hair during 1 day. Next day, in the morning my hair is already somewhat oily.
I've yet to find some shampoo which can successfully fight dandruff and regulate sebum production. Tea tree seems to do a much better job than zinc or selenium, just need something else to make my scalp produce less oil. I've tried jojoba oil but no luck.
One thing I do notice, is that with very short hair it helps.

+1. These are definitely to be tried...I have never tried them myself, but ingredient-wise, they have better wholesome "stuff" than the typical shampoo. It should be good for your hair.

Something else I would try is baking soda, mixed in with your shampoo bar, it tends to balance out the pH of your scalp and will lead to much healthier set of hair. You don't need to do it every day, just once or twice a week. Give it a shot (don't expect overnight results) and see how it goes.

I ended up picking up a bar of J.R. Liggett's along with some other shaving goodness because someone gave me a $50 Amazon card

Argan oil seems to down-regulate oil production, and it makes hair shiny and manageable, too. Try a shampoo bar that contains argan oil. I recommend the one from mystic water soaps (www.mysticwatersoaps.com).

This

I too have fine and oily hair, and the l'Oreal is great

The other one that I like is Axe Primed (Just Clean, blue bottle)

I would love to try it, but the shipping costs from the USA are prohibitive for the average Portuguese. The only place I order it's from iherb.com which has a $4 flat rate.

I think it depends: priority mail is expensive although if you are sending heavy items it is advantageous, 1st class mail is actually quite reasonable for light things although it takes a bit longer - my son lives in Italy and packages usually arrive in about three weeks.

The cheap or expensive will depend where you live, and your financial status. For an average Portuguese $13 for shipping costs is alot, but for an average american those are pocket changes. I would love to try some Mystic Water soaps and Chagrin Valley soaps as well, but I think I would have to win the lottery first

Have you tried an anti-dandruff shampoo? I use some Pantene that I bought a bunch of when it was on clearance at work a while back, and it helps a lot.

I have short hair, but it tends to get very oily, especially at night after I haven't showered since morning. It keeps my hair from getting that sheen that you might know about, without it getting dried out and flaky. Might be worth a try.

I already use Head and Shoulders twice a week to keep my dandruff under control. Thanks for the input though. I ordered a bar off amazon, cost me about $7 shipped, and it's actually been working pretty good. I don't know why I never knew about these shampoo bars! They're really neat!
