Growing Coffee

Anyone try growing coffee? planning on growing it in south Florida, so not much freezing (maybe a couple of hours per year tops). anyone try before? got a 8" arabica plant for $8 so figured its worth a shot.

Sounds like fun. I think Florida is a little bit north of the traditional growing regions and at a lower altitude, but maybe its possible to get flowers to bloom and cherries to grow. Let us know how it goes.

Lots of people have a few plants for a lark or a conversation piece. The coffee plant is a perennial but it is really fussy when it comes to the soil. The west coast seems to enjoy a coffee growing popularity from north california clear up to lower mainland of BC. Don't forget, even if you are successful keeping the plant alive, you're still looking at between 4-6 years before bean production. Were I you, I'd give it a shot.

I'm envious because I live too far north to attempt this outside of a greenhouse.

no kidding! Just last weekend I put in the tomato plants and it's still kind of iffy. I'll bet even inside my house wouldn't be warm enough.

Two trees I would love to see modified to grow in cold, northern climates: Avocado and Coffee.

I think it's botanically interesting that there are so few fatty fruits and nuts that are temperate climes or colder. There are many things like avocados in the tropics, but almonds are practically in a class by themselves in colder areas.
