Ground ?

This may sound stupid, but I just picked up my first straight razor off the bay Wed. night, A Faultless Straight Razor F.A. Koch & Co. Germany, and it is a Extra Hollow Ground - Quote (You are bidding on a vintage straight razor with it's original box/case. It is a Fautless by F.A.Koch & Co. Made in Germany. The blade is in excellent condition and measures 5 1/2" in length. Razor closed is 6 1/4" and 9 1/2" when open all the way. It has a black hard plastic celluoid-look handle. It comes in it's bright red case which is stamped in gold lettering: Extra Hollow Ground Fully Warranted in 2 lines and Made in Germany. Box and razor are both in excellent condition.) Just wondering what the difference in the Ground, Full Ground, Half Ground, Quarter Ground ??? Thanks, got a beautiful Razor coming and just curious what I got.

First off, congrats on your first straight razor! Now comes learning how to hone and buying all those stones...and at least one more straight so you can rotate...and it goes on from there. :)

The grind has to do with how much metal is removed on the blade to create the edge. This affects the characteristics of the blade and how it shaves. Full-hollow seems to be much more forgiving than a wedge, however full-hollow blades are also more fragile.

The following picture taken from Straight Razors shows different grinds. Number 1 would be an example of a hollow grind, but doesn't look thin enough to be a full-hollow.

Just had a look at Wikipedia (not B&B Wiki but the first link). To me, it looks more like the bevel if I look at the picture than a Full Hollow ground of something like it...

I thought so too (it was the closest I was able to find ATM). These aren't the best examples however, but I figured they would aid in describing what a hollow grind is. I was going to post a link to a wiki article from SRP since those guys are more straight razor oriented, but thought that might be rude. (?)
