Grooves/ serrations on tang

Not sure if that's what they're called, but I just picked up my first straight to restore and it has grooves on the tang for grip. What r some of the ways to remove rust and tarnish from this area?

They are called jimps, and the small wire wheel and dremel will clean most of it, if it is really bad, you can try a "detail abrasive brush"

Stainless wire wheel on a Dremel is good, sometimes you can do it with a stainless toothbrush type of thing too, which is somewhat safer.
Be careful of that wheel on the dremel - it can spit those wires out so wear goggles.

sisel wheel is all I use to clean jumps. Just abrasive wheel with hay/rope-like bristles coming out.
