Grocery/Box Store Available Aftershave/Astringent Suggestions

I am going to either Kroger (grocery store) or Walmart (you know what that is) tomorrow. One of the things, I need to pick up is some more astringent or some aftershave. I currently have been using Sea Breeze Sensitive Skin Formula after my wet shaves followed by a splash of cold water. I have no complaints about it but just might want to try something different. I am lookimng for some suggestions for an astringent or aftershave that I could just buy while there.

My Dad used Dickinson's witch hazel. Not my favorite scent. Keep them coming though. I may stop by a RiteAid or Walgreens too.

Skin Bracer Original, Aqua Velva Musk are both inexpensive splashes, Walmart also carries Halston Z-14, better scent for a few bucks more.

Skin Bracer, Aqua Velva Ice Blue, Aqua Velva Musk, Brut, Old Spice: all smell great, and have become classics for good reason.

Wal-Mart also stocks Stetson Cooling Moisture Aftershave, which smells great, and also has a decent amount of menthol to provide cooling.

Old Spice for sure.

Clubman if you want to smell like an old barber just brushed powder on your neck. I'm not a fan either.

For the record, I use witch hazel and THEN Old Spice...the WH smell goes away once that OS gets splashed on.

Most of the box store aftershaves are worth a try. In particular, I like Aqua Velva if a menthol/cooling aftershave sounds good and Old Spice for something "warmer" and more Fall-smelling.

Near me, both stores carry the new-ish Nivea Energy splash. If you're using Sea Breeze, you might find this to be right up your alley.

Well, I went to Kroger and while shopping I checked out many of the aftershaves mentioned here. Here are my thoughts about them...

Aqua Velva (Ice Blue)... It smelled okay but nothing of which to brag. Probably one of the better ones in the group.
I always think of the scene in Twins when Danny Devito throws a bottle of it on the trash can after thanking his secretary for giving it to him as gift. (I wouldn't pitch a bottle of it in the trash like him but I wouldn't spend my money on it.)

Brut... BRUTally stinks.

Old Spice... I wear their Red Zone Deodorant (not Original scent) and I recall my Grandpa wearing this aftershave. However, I opened the bottle and it is NOT the same smell that he smell that he wore. It's similar but "weaker" or "less spiced"... I can't explain it but even though it's label said Original Scent, it literally "doesn't pass the smell test." I wish it was the REAL original scent.

Skin Bracer... Smelled medicinal and old man ointment-y.

afta... afta hell freezes over I will buy that crap.

Adidas Dynamic... It was okay. It didn't seem to have a too strong a smell. I will smell this one, again, the next time I go shopping because after smelling all the others my sinuses where having a hard time really taking in anything that wasn't super strong smelling.

Nivea Energy and (Neutrogena Something) where also in-stock but like I said with the Adidas one, I couldn't really smell anything clearly at that point, so I left them to ckeck out next time.

As for now, I think I'll be sticking with the Sea Breeze Sensitive Skin for my everyday post shave splash.

However, do have a 20+ year old bottle of Avon Canada Goose Deep Woods Aftershave that was my Grandpa's special occassion aftershave. Im sure the age effects the smell but I do really LOVE the smell of this stuff. Plus, it doesn't get much more awesome than an actual glass goose shaped bottle. If any one knows if his stuff is still in production or where I can buy old bottles of it. PLEASE let me know about it.

Over on the never ending PIF thread there is a PIF with a choice of the Avon glass bottles and some are still filled.

Thank you for the tip. Interestingly, a friend of the family is actually the guy who designed that particular bottle and several other of the Avon glass bottles from the 1970's. (That why my Grandparents had the Canada Goose and several other of the Avon glass bottles.)
Sadly, my wife just noticed I was on ebay and asked what I was looking to purchase. I told her of the old aftershave that I have in the bedroom. She replied "It's not the stuff in that bird (while wrinkling up her nose) is it?" :001_unsur She likes the look of the bottle though but since I already have one for decoration, I don't really need more of it. As much as I love it PERSONALLY, if the wife doesn't want to be around it... it won't be an everyday aftershave.

Luckily, the bottle is almost completely full. I will STILL wear it on special occassions and since it's strong it'll probably last me a very long time.

Briefly sniffing a fragrance from the bottle is not a very good way to get a feel for any fragrance. A fragrance has to be worn before you can form any sort of opinion on it.

This is especially true, because fragrances change over time they have top notes (what you smell for the first few minutes upon application), middle/ heart notes (what you smell when the top notes fizzle out), and base notes (the final parts of the fragrance that hang around for hours).

In addition, fragrances react with your own individual body chemistry, so the same fragrance will not necessarily smell identical on two different people.

Yeah, I knew that from colognes BUT if I don't like the initial smell of something than I'm not going to buy it. I have heard good things about Bay Rum. I may see if they have any I can smell at Walgreens or something.
