Grinding For Espresso

I have a Sunbeam EM0450 which works fine for french press, vacuum pot etc, however I have just borrowed a Gaggia Classic to try out and I can't get any crema from my shots. I was thinking that maybe my grinder isn't getting a fine enough grind, as even on the finest setting the grind looks fairly course. Will a higher quality grinder get a finer grind?

Yes. In the meantime try to tamp tighter/ harder. A great shot can be hard to make. Remember fresh, good quality coffee, water, grind, and tamp. Nothing can be trivialized. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I had a play around with the grinder this morning and worked out that one of tabs that threads into the adjustment collar was slightly bent and therefore not threading properly, so the adjustment wasn't working. All fixed now and getting a nice fine grind.

If the coffee is reasonably fresh, it shouldn't matter if the grinder is dialed in or not. You'll still get crema.

Where in Oz are you located?

I'm in Sydney.

Before fixing my grinder it was spitting out a seriously coarse grind - no chance for crema! Getting a beautiful shot now though.

I've got a Gaggia MDF Burr Grinder.. I have it set to 7 and don't usually adjust the setting. There are so many variables involved when making Espresso that adding variance while trying to perfect the technique just makes it harder, in my opinion, to get proper process feedback with which to adjust your technique.

It also depends on the kind of coffee you are using. Try out a small package of pre-ground espresso coffee, Lavazza Qualita Oro is my favourite you can get around here. My favourite is Chico D'oro but you can only get it in Switzerland (if you see it in NA let me know it is so delicious).

Buy good quality beans from a local roaster, they can grind the beans there. If you buy a small amount and keep them in an airtight container it should keep them fresh for a short period of time. NEVER put them in the freezer.
