What's new

Grill selection.

SO I am currently using a Lodge outpost cast Iron Grill (which I love):

But, it has limitations...
Small cooking area, no cover, and I am worried that my toddler is might be imperiled because it glows the most pleasing cherry red when stoked. I'm careful, but better to have a situation that minimizes a need for vigilance, if ya get my drift.
Also, I have long lusted after one of these:

Well, on one of the deal forums I frequent much is being made of this:

Recently heavily discounted by Home Depot to 299 from some figure far more astronomical, it appears to have a bit of a following. It offers a generous grilling area and a host of interesting accessories (yes that is an included trailer hitch mount):

And it apparently stays cool to the touch, for safety.
Thoughts?

I can't say enough about ceramic grills. I am a Primo owner but won't diss BGE, especially since I want to buy a MINI for picnics and when I wanna cook a single burger while the wife is gone.

I have been curious about the bubba keg for picnics and I think it would be a hoot to carry behind my MINI Cooper to club events. I do have my doubts though. The basic ceramic grill has been around for thousands of years, why go mucking around with aluminum :).

This isn't going to help :tongue_sm

Komodo Kamado

I will have one... Eventually.

I do have a medium-sized Char-Griller, which is great and affordable. It has cast-iron grates, which are awesome.

I believe in ceramics more than any of my webers. My neighbor has a small japanese style "hibachi" made out of ceramic. It required only a few lumps of coal and cooked some steak and a turkey leg. I must say that the grill flavor was deeper and the food cooked a little more even with less fuel than my smokey joe.

But alas, I use a large gas grill for convenience and size. The kidies and work never seem to let me grill in peace :)

I have Primo Jr. I love it, not really portable as the bubba keg, but I made some thick 2.5-3" pork chops yesterday grilled @ 350 dome temp and they turned out great, much better than my charbroil gasser ever did. Probably in the next couple of years I will go bigger and and grab a normal Primo Oval for more room.

I think the satisfaction I get out of a normal cook is well worth the premium price.

My wife and I bought the Big Green Egg (Large) a couple of months ago. It was the Best money we have spent in years. I've used it at least twice a week since we bought it, and will be using it more now that soccer season is over for a couple of months

Buy quality and you only cry once :001_cool:

Much better than what ????? the free charbroil gasser that your super nice brother and sister in law gave u?:sneaky2::sneaky2::sneaky2::sneaky2:

I have the orion cooker and it is amazing. I can smoke a 6lb pulled pork in 4 hours. It can make up to 6 racks of ribs in about an hour and a half. I have never regretted the purchase.

I have an Orion also. It works excellent as part of an outdoor kitchen collection AD.

Whelp, broke down and got the Keg. 299 and then I got HD to accept a 10% Lowes coupon (yup they accept some competitors store coupons) for a total of 269$. Only problem is I'm working all weekend and don't even have time to put it together.
For the price, I didn't see anything even roughly equivalent.

Looking to start by smoking a chicken on the theory that chickens are cheap if I get it wrong. Don't really have any smoking experience. I come from the skillet/broil/grill on hottest school of cooking, having something with fine temperature control will be interesting.

i think the best intro to smoking a chicken is spatchcock style (like butterflying). they are quick easy and I like to use woods like apple, maple, cherry as the smoke flavor profile is nice & light, but definitely there .
