Grey Ink Recommendations

Still using the stock black ink inside my Pilot Plumix and sometimes it writes very light and looks almost grey. At first this annoyed the hell out of me, but now it is growing on me. Apologize if this has been asked before (couldn't find any threads in B&B search or a targeted search on Google), but does anybody here have experience with grey ink and if so what are some good ones to go after? I'm feeling its time for a healthy Goulet sample order!

I just got the Pilot Iroshizuku old man winter. It is a nice grey I think. Someone else has mentioned Noodler's Lexington grey.

They're a mere 2ml, though. Hard to really do anything with it, IMO/ E.

2ML is more than enough for a converter or most piston fillers in my experience. I got a full fill on my Lamy 2k with the Iroshizuku Kiri-Same. Really great ink. The Fuyu-Syogun is lighter and just as good. I am a big fan of the shading I get from all my Iroshizuku inks. I felt like the Noodler's greys I had couldn't stand up to the Iroshizuku ones :( . Though I do like other Noodler inks.

I agree that the Goulet sample size is enough to get a feel for the ink. It can fit nicely inside an eyedroppered Kaweco Sport or Preppy, so you don't even need a syringe if necessary.

I am no great defender of Noodler's Lexington Grey, but it IS waterproof &c, which may or may not be of any importance to the OP.

Waterproof is no big deal here with the greys. This is a "for fun" ink. You guessed my order, Doc...I purchased the grey sampler and an eyedroppered Preppy to dedicate to experimenting with them from the Goulet's earlier tonight.

A while back, I too went on a quest to find a nice gray ink. I settled on the Noodler's Lexington Gray (much to my surprise as I'm not a big fan of the Noodler's inks) due to it's excellent flow and lubrication and relatively low price. Of all the grays I tried, it was the truest gray, looking very much like pencil once dry. It doesn't exhibit any of the blue, green or purple tinting/shading that other brands' grays do. My second choice would be the Private Reserve Gray Flannel, but it has a distinct greenish tone when dry.

I'm a fan of Montblanc Oyster Grey. Writes well and has some nice shading. Others I've tried were too blue or green.

I have J. Herbin Cacao Du Bresil and it is a nice Brown Gray. I was hoping it would be more Brown-Black like a lower cost version of Iroshizuku Wild Chestnut (yama-guri) I like it, but it is not quite what I was looking for. I find the ink to be quite well behaved, though it does feather some on our work paper, but so does Feather X. I like the samples from Goulet, but they can be hard to get into some pens. I have been using a syringe and eyedropper filling empty cartridges, or converters. I have also used the ink containers to send out some samples to people as well, most likely the only way I will get rid of all that BSB as I got the big bottle.

I like he Pilot Old Man Winter. I got the now exwife a bottle of it for christmas because she liked it so much.

Congratulations! I hope to have one soon. Nice that you got her some ink though.
