Grey Flannel EDT vs Aftershave

Gents, every so many years I get the urge to try this scent again and always come away thinking it is either too overwhelming in its initial dry down or I get an acrid note from it. I have always felt a similar scent would be fabulous for fall weather. Would the a/s version take it down a notch or should I look elsewhere for a violet type scent?

Have and use both the edt and aftershave. Think they are very similar in scent and characteristics. Agree there is a harsh initial "blast", but for me that passes very quickly and becomes a wonderful, unique scent.

John, it may be superfluous to ask given your description but is the a/s any less intense? And I have my doubts about its aftershave properties but what do you think?

I have both edt and a/s and usually put them on after the wife leaves for work. It's too strong for her tastes until after the dry-down. It's a bit strong for me too, but I can usually push through it.

Todd, very good question for which I do not have an immediate answer. Since I put them on almost simultaneously, I have really not noticed. Will try it soon with some length inbetween so I have a better idea. Logic would say that the a/s is less intense, but I really do not know.

Todd, I have failed! Last night I caught an unimaginable cold and am completely stuffed. Did try the Grey Flannel a/s on one side and the edt on the other side, but could really not smell either. I will try to remember to try it again, but, if history is any indication, it will be a month before I can smell again! Sorry!

Hi John. Sorry to hear about your cold. I am grateful that here in cattle country we are finally seeing some 50-60 degree days with DRY North air. It has mitigated whatever it is in the air here that gives me sinus headaches for about six to eight months of the year. So I am doing well.

As to the Grey Flannel, no worries. A semi-blind buy is in order. You can source it in a edt and a/s set for about $20 at TJ Maxx or Amazon. And the bottles are a full four ounces that way rather than the 3.4 oz size individually. If I cannot use it it will make a nice pre-Christmas PIF on the contributors forum. Thanks again and get well soon.

Thanks for the wishes! And I think you have a very good plan. For me, after the first several minutes, the scent is divine!

John I have already sorted it. A quick trip to Maxx secured a bottle of the A/S for $8. I promptly opened it and was greeted with a familiar aroma. What I did not get was the acrid note I got from the Edt years ago. This is less in your face while still being Grey Flannel. I have seen it hazarded that this stuff has been reforrmulated(for the better I might add) on several different web sites. I am unsure but if this works out I may grab the Edt later. I splashed some on and it is not over powering. You know, these old power fragrances from the 70s get pooh poohed all the time by 'scent snobs' but they are vastly superior to the generic water scents served up these days.

Good to hear, Todd. You have reminded me that several years ago Gray Flannel (Geof Beene) was suppose to have been bought out by some mass production company. Perhaps there was a reformulation and a change for the better. I couldn't say because that rumor/fact was enough to make me stock up!!!

Aye John, if you really like something then stock up. You know what happens if you don't. As for the GF a/s I am really pleased. I splashed on a copious amount this morning and was pleasantly rewarded by NOT being blasted out of the bath. It did not hit me with the bitter acrid note I'd remembered from years past. That was the edt version though and nearly thirty years ago. I have bottle sniffed the edt since and always got the feeling it could overwhelm me so I stayed away. So the difference could easily be way the a/s is made vs the edt. There is only one way to find out though! TJ Maxx has a bottle of the edt for $12.99 and it may come home with me yet. Like I said, PIF on contributors forum is the way to solve any buyers remorse. As for reformulation I cannot verify or deny it. I have seen it posted in various places. I will say the scent is unmistakably Grey Flannel. My personal opinion is that nearly any fragrance has been tampered with over the decades. If it lasts that long. About the only ones that could escape that fate are the hand crafted, uber expensive types. I suspect even the Chanel scents are not the same as when little Coco designed them.
