What's new

Great Uncle (In Law) Heirloom :D

So my wife got home tonight and handed me this beautiful shiny case and said "Uncle Sal wanted me to give you this". Her great uncle was going through some of his stuff and came across it and thought of me first (I guess my new wet shaving addiction popped into his mind ). Before I even opened it, I recognized the case as that of a DE.

Once I opened it, inside I found this:

$P7290030.jpg
$P7290031.jpg

The only little tiny flaw is this:

Otherwise in near mint condition.

Apparently one of his nieces bought it for him for an occasion (birthday?) a long time ago... brand new. I have been looking for a slant too... so it is perfect! I am very honored to have this gift passed down to me, and he was glad to be able to give it to someone who will appreciate/ use it.

Does anyone have any further information on this razor? (I'm sure someone does lol)

Ok, going to shave... see ya!

Great Story! Thanks.
My first DE was an Aunt-In-Laws Tech, which, she wants me to keep and "think of Aunt Jeanne when you use it"... :001_smile (Priceless People giving us priceless razors).

Congrats, Chris-- that's a wonderful set. I have one just like it, although yours appears to be especially minty (apart from that little blemish on the handle). For me, the Hoffritz slant consistently delivers great shaves; I think it would be my desert island razor, in fact. I'm eagerly awaiting Ikon's prospective launch of its all stainless steel slant. In any event, I can't tell you much about Hoffritz other than I understand the company sold high end cutlery and razors from stores in New York beginning, I think, in the 1940s. I don't think Hoffritz actually manufactured any of the goods it sold, and I've heard that Dovo Solingen made Hoffritz razors. Perhaps some of the resident B&B experts will weigh in with more accurate and complete information. Oh, and at various times Hoffritz razors were James Bond's shaving tools of choice (e.g., The Man with the Golden Gun, Octopussy and The Living Daylights). They were open comb models, though, not slants.

Enjoy your Hoffritz!

Thanks guys! Just got a DFS with some Mike's and a NOS Gillette Blue Blade (for complete vintage experience) and I must say it is a GREAT shaver! I've never gotten such easy smoothness on my chin. So far I'm loving it :w00t:

Very nice, congratulations, the shaves are really nice and the knurling feels great on those handles, enjoy! I had one and let it go for some silly reason.

Even if it wasn't a great shaver that is a wonderful heirloom, that fact that it is a great shaver makes it priceless.

I was trying to date a Vintage Merkur slant in this thread a while back and a helpful member named Rockabillyhelge pointed me to a German site that displayed a couple of Merkur catalogs dated 1956 and 1962. Scroll down this thread about half way. Item number 37 looks similar but my eyes are so poor tonight I can not pull the head shape up good enough. Hope this will at least get you in the right range for this style.

Did I ever tell you it's beautiful?

Oh cool thanks for the info. I thought it looked like a Merkur, but wasn't sure they actually were the ones who made em... Pretty cool. So... Do you like it? :tongue_sm

Is it beautiful though?

I had a great uncle (who died before I was born) who was originally from Germany. A few months ago my dad mentioned that he had an old razor of his that he wanted to give me but he couldn't find it. I had dreams of a nice shiny German Hoffritz slant (given that he was from Germany). A couple weeks later my dad said he found it and produced an Ever Ready 1912 SE razor made in Brooklyn, NY. The Ever Ready is great, in fact I used it for last night's shave, but a Hoffritz slant would've been cool too :001_rolle.

Congratulations and enjoy. Family heirloom razors are the best!!

Ben

Wow, that is a nice razor. Congrats, enjoy it! Waiting on some of your B/S/T threads.

 You may just be on to something. After using it last night, I dont see a reason to use any other razor (other than novelty/variety of course) but you will never get my Toggle :tongue_sm
