I've never been there, but why do I get the feeling half of that town survives off alien tourism?

That's people visiting the place, not aliens...

I have always enjoyed Roswell. I overnighted there frequently when I was at the airline. The UFO culture is a big driver of tourism but there is much else to enjoy. Some real rocket science took place here. The city museum has a fantastic display recreating Robert Goddard’s machine shop and many rocket artifacts from his experiments. The same museum boasts a Georgia O’Keefe original. There are many great restaurants and the folks are super friendly. Here is my enchilada lunch at Cerritos Restaurant, a crew favorite!
