Grandpa's razor

Today I'm at my grandmother's sorting out some things after the death of my grandfather. My grandma asked me if I was interested in having my grandpa's Mach 3.
"Your grandfather used an electric razor during the weeks but in the weekends he treated himself and used a razor. Up to this summer he used his old Gillette but the last years it's been hard for us finding the right type of blades so his barber told him to get one of these new Gillettes. The Mach 3 is almost new. You can have it if you want", she told me.

If they only had asked me for some blades...

Anyway, I asked her about the old razor and she gave it to me. It will be fun using something else than my Merkur HD. I will do some cleaning tomorrow and update the thread but here are some photos. Btw, the box says made in England and the razor says US. Maybe not the right box...

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, you have my condolences .. The razor looks like a 46-47 USA Aristocrat, and it's a very nice shaver to boot.

Sorry Mr. Razor you beat me to it..

First and foremost, I offer you my condolences on your grandfather's passing. This gift will always serve as a memory of times you and he probably shared over the years and as such is an invaluable token to be cherished. Use it well and in good health :thumbup1:.

Congratulations, you got a great razor with sentimental value. I'm sure that you'll enjoy using it, and it will be a great way to remember your grandfather.

My condolences on the passing of your grandfather. After the sadness passes, I hope you will enjoy the acquisition of such a personal item that you will be able to use and always have that special connection to him as you use it. I acquired my grandfathers Gillette Tuckaway, but unfortunately he passed away before I was born. But every time I use it it's a special moment knowing he used it to get ready for his day at work as I do.

Agree totally.

Quite a few times while I am shaving, I say to myself that I wished my dad was still around to share a shave with me.

My son is a DE shaver and we have had one shave-a-thon so far. Great fun.

I always harken to the lyrics from a Brooks and Dunn song:

"You better kiss me, cause you're gonna miss me when I'm gone"

Ditto for all of the above.

My paternal grandfather died when my Dad was 12 years old but my grandmother remarried sometime later. This man was the only grandfather I knew. I have many fond memories of him. He was a waiter in some of NYC biggest and most famous restaurants his entire life. He worked in the Waldorf-Astoria during the heyday of the big band era, and all the famous big band leaders would eat dinner in the restaurant and sign their checks to their rooms with their fountain pens and very often leave the pen on the silver tray with the check. Some of them would not take it back and would tell him to keep it. Well fast forward many years and a couple of years before he passed, knowing my love for fountain pens he gave me the 3 he had left. With a little TLC from a reputable repairman they work as good as new and everytime I write with one, I think of him.

By the way, being the oldest grandchild and a male at that gave me special status in my Italian-American family so when my children were born, their first 2 great-grandchildren, my grandparents couldn't get enough of them. My grandfather just adored my son and would let him do things no one else could get away with. Well, he has the same affitity for fountain pens so when he graduated from college this past year and achieved his teaching certification I gave him one of those pens. I cannot tell you how that felt and how he cherishes it too.

Sorry for the rambling and did not mean to hijack the thread.

Enjoy the razor.

Mike

First, thanks for all your kind words. I feel it´s really nice to have such an everyday item as a razor to have as memory of my grandfather, something he used for years and hopefully I will use it for many years to come.

Yesterday I cleaned the razor and today I used it. It was quite a different feel to my HD but soon I got the hang of it. I must say, trying to be as objective as possible, the shave was great. On par with the best shaves I get from my HD. I guess this was a great gift, not only as a token to remember my grandfather by but also as a great safety razor. I will definitly use this as my primary razor. Maybe this will help me live till I´m 92.

I usually don´t post shaves of the day but today will be an exception. Today my shave was Dr Harris Arlington soap, Duke 3, Granpa´s Aristocrat and Proraso pre-post as a/s. It was a great shave...

I´m no aspiring photographer by any means but here´s a picture.
