What's new

Got a new Futur

I got a new futur in the mail today!:biggrin1: I'm excited to use it but also a little nervous as I have heard how aggressive it is. I am just trying to get an opinion of someone who has been in my shoes and what setting they started at. I don't want to be disappointed in the shave I get by being to cautious but also don't want to have to clean blood up in my bathroom. Any advice is really appreciated and I hope that the new razor will make me happy.
Thanks

Congrats! I like hearing about the Futur and reading the reviews. How long have you been DE Shaving? I'd like to hear more good stuff. Let us know how it turns out.

I have been DE shaving for about a year now and just decided that I wanted to try something else out. I got to looking around and hated the look of the Progress and didn't want to pay 120 bucks for a Mergress so I settled on the futur. I know that it has mixed reviews and the opinions seem quite polarized but I think that if I am patient I will be able to figure it out. I'll update back about the shave when I get to it.

start off on the lowest setting. my first DE was a futur - my first few shaves (as you could guess) consisted of many weepers and a bit of neck irritation. I thought the manly thing to do was 'dial it up' - wrong!

if you take your time you should be ok given that you've been wetshaving for a year. best of luck!

Personally, I find this razor is best set at the highest settings. You get a true sense of the blade and get used to it quickly. I was trying to take it easy as well when I first got it but was frustrated because I couldn't get a decent shave. Because of its weight and design, you quickly realize no pressure is necessary. Use a Polsilver or Feather in it and enjoy the ride. Crank it up and see how it feels. If its too much, dial it down. I started wetshaving back in May of this year so I'm sure your technique is good and can handle it. Trust me!

I always have mine set at 3.5 unless I'm hacking off a playoff beard then I dial it all the way up. To be honest though, even at 1 it's still got quite the gap so I don't find too much difference in it unless I'm comparing the two extremes of the scale (1 and 6.) I love my Futur, it's one I plan on keeping around forever, hope you like yours.

I'm in your shoes, I just got my Futur in this week too. I've been a straight shaver for about two years, but I have very little experience with DE's. I looked at from a straight shaver's point of view and tried to guess-timate which angle I would be most comfortable with by sight alone. The highest setting seemed to me to be best from the angle of the blade. I opened up a few weepers on my neck until I dialed it back to one. The worst part was when I rinsed the blade under a running tap I found that I had removed a perfect ribbon of skin from the very front of my Adam's apple, (I found the skin in my sink). That one ended up bleeding pretty badly.

I took a couple of days off of wet shaving while the neck healed, but I'm ready for round two this morning on a lower setting.

Alright, so the shave is scheduled for tonight before I have to go into work. Thankfully I work night shift so only a few people can see my hacked up face. I will report back tomorrow and let you guys know what I thought about my first futur shave. Wish me luck!

Haha I luckily have a full head of hair that I am proud of but when it comes time to accept that I am going bald I will think about that.

Futur is in the running to be my favorite De, and possibly the only one I'll use since I'm getting into straights and SE. Since you're experienced, it should work great! Use it as you would any other DE. Fantastic tool.

So since I have a little spare time at work I decided that I would give you guys the shakedown on how the shave went. I lathered up the old trusty Proraso with my Vie-Long and went to town painting. At the recommendation of bmilcs I turned the razor up to seven and went at it. I was pleasantly surprised how smoothly the Futur glided across my face and easily took the hair off. After my first pass I had managed only one weeper on the bottom of my jaw but was happy with what I had accomplished. The next pass against the grain was the true test of the Futur's abilities and it far exceded my expectations. By using the razor on the highest setting I was awarded with an amazingly close shave on my face.

The only complaint that I could have is I couldn't quite get the blade angle right on my neck so I ended up with some irritation but I am sure with a little more practice that I can nail it down to a science. The futur is truly a nice piece of equipment and I am shocked that it ends up with as many negative reviews as it does. I really am looking forward to getting to use the razor some more and really perfecting my shave with it.

For all of the beginners or people who think that the futur is too agressive, don't be afraid to try it because you will absolutely love how smooth the shave is. My reservations about buying the futur were completely erased after tonight and I am so glad that I didn't fear getting cut or nicked. Thanks everyone in this Thread for the info and the help.

I put all my others aside after the Futur, and have no more reason to use them. I haven't, however, cranked it up. I stay at level 1 because it provides a very worry free (got my first weepers yesterday), quick, and comfortable 2.5 pass shave. I might end up trying it at 7 with this, but with 1 I have had the same blade for the last ... I think 10 shaves (SI). Might have to trying burning it down at max, if it only results in a bit of irritation on the first try. :) Don't want to not use all the features on this thing. So, your post gives confidence.

I had heard that it can be useful to dial down with each pass. I started at 5 for WTG but it left a lot of stubble behind so I kept it at 5 for XTG and really tore up my neck, nicks everywhere. Then in pain, I dialled down to 1 for ATG. Very disappointing shave.
Yesterday I did this. It was my first time with a futur too. It was with a Shark SS blade and tonight when I shave for work tomorrow I'll be back with the 34C.
It'll get a second attempt after Monday. So far, not so good.

My man! I'm thrilled you took my advise and cranked it up. It's a fantastic razor - one of my favorites. Congrats on having the guts to take full advantage of th futurs smooth aggressiveness!
