Google voice.....what do you think?

sounds like another way to keep tabs on people, and keep us suppressed under the guise of "convenience technology"
:biggrin::wink:

I signed up for it back when it was still Grand Central. Since then I completely forgot about it.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up what I think of it. :biggrin:

I don't think it's really all that novel of an idea anymore.
More and more people are just using their Cell for everything. And you can get a cell with all the features that you can get using google voice, so I don't get the point.

Are there really that many people out there that have multiple phone lines and want to combine them?

I'm one of them.
I've got two cell phones [one work, one personal], a land line, VOIP from my ISP, and Skype...

I am waiting for it to open. I have a cell, land line and Skype that might make it worth it. Although I am even more interested in Google Wave and hope that gets released soon.

I was an inactive user of Grand Central and started using Google voice actively since it came out. The quality is better than Skype, and the email transcriptions of voicemail and the caller screening and blocking are useful. Since we are getting rid of our landline, it is good to have another number to give to people who I don't necessarily want calling my cell phone.

I don't worry about the privacy issues, since no one in the US has any privacy anymore.

It has a lot of unique features as the ability to record some calls and transcribe messages although from what I have seen so far there transcribe methods need a lot of work, the ability to have one number to give out to allow is already offered by some companies Google is just combining that with a lot of other features together, they just acquired 1 million phone numbers so they have major plans for it and like all Google products I am sure it will constantly evolve.

I doubt it will effect major carriers a lot at first as a considerable number of people have already gotten rid of there home landlines for just a cell phone and those who have a cell phone already are unlikely to give it up, but where it may be a major force is if they integrate it in the future with there own cell phones running Android of course especially should Google decide to enter the cell phone business as a carrier.

Where else it will have an impact is on some answering services and or contact centers who do a lot of work for small one person businesses (contractors, dr's, lawyers, etc) who need to be able to be reached 24/7 for emergencys this perhaps could be a free alternative.
