Good Starter SE (Non Injector/Cobra) for a DE Shaver.

Anyone have any recommendations for a good SE razor to start with? I have been shaving with DEs for a while now, and just for fun I wanted to try out a SE razor (GEM, etc.. not injector or cobra). Thoughts on a good place to start? Thanks.

Many will say to try a 1912 GEM, I'd recommend a Micromatic if you like the more aggressive type .. either are available for pennies on EBay, just make sure that the corner stops (edges of the blade at the face side) are present.

They also shave with a bit different angle than a DE ..

Good luck

I assume a Star 1912 would be similar to a GEM 1912?

Almost anything in the Gem/Ever Ready/Star lineup from 1912 onward would be good for a beginner, with the exception of the open comb micromatic. That thing requires a little more skill. Get accustomed to using a single edge on something more forgiving before trying that one.
The 1912 is going to be easiest to find. Millions of them made, plenty of them still working, and can be bought dirt cheap.

Why not try the Micromatic Open Comb? Theres lot of talk about how agressive it is but in my experience its just a big friendly dog if you treat it with respect!

Well my very generous friend Lucidor (Thank you again!) recently pifed one to me and some Ted Pellas blades. My first Single Edge razor. Boy, was a nervous. I even had to wait a few days to collect the courage to use it. It surely looks dangerous with all the blade sticking out. :-D

But it turned out its a fantastic close shaver. Far more easier to handle than the common undestanding at forums. And its very inuitive to. I had some use ofcourse, of the experts knowledge here and specially MrGuys excellent shaving videos.

It so good it changed my daily routine, and the last days i have been shaving with a combo.
First pass with the OCMC and second with the Rotbart Mond Extra (Old Type). Imo less iration on my skin and a very long lasting shave. They knew how to make a good razor then.
I have even bought some more Single Edge razors at Ebay.

So give it a try!

Interesting. You do one pass with a SE and then one with a DE?

If you can shave well with a DE, than you will have no problem except figuring out the nose area.
s to n on the upper lip works for me. Ocmm is a big friendly dog.

Under the nose is basically an across the grain pass, norhing comicated about it at all, just go slow and follow the contour of that area carefully.
The g-bar is a very good beginner choice as you really need to work hard to make it bite.

To agree with the others, try a G-Bar. It is a very friendly razor.
A 1912 is very friendly as well.
I like the Gem blades I buy at Walgreen's. Works great for me.

Why no injectors? They're easy for a beginner SE user to use, give nice mild shaves, and have no trouble getting under the nose. But with taking those off the table, I'd have to agree with either the G-Bar or a 1912.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Injectors are just fantastic shavers. You're missing out!
