Good News basically a disposable Trac II?

I was looking to help my dad out with his shaving.
He is 61 years old and REFUSES to try a good DE razor, I have told him and told him of the good results that I have with them and how his dad used a Super Speed for forty years but he will have none of the logic :001_rolle
He started out as a DE shaver back in the sixties but joined the Marine Corp and got hooked on some candy-a$$ed cartridge razor in the seventies while he was in Japan. I am assuming it may have been a Trac II since that was what was available at the time??
Anyways for the past 30 years I know for a fact he will shave with nothing but Gillette Good News disposables and he claims they shave best for him.
I was looking at a Good News razor and it is a fixed head with dual blades and a lube strip. Is this not basically a throw-away Trac II??
I have ordered a Trac II handle from dridiot for myself but I would give it to my dad if this theory is correct as it would save him alot of money just buying the carts rather than Good News razors everytime he goes to the store. I could then just order another Trac II for myself.

Any thoughts. let me know :001_smile

I guess the I can see the similarity between the Trac II, and the Good News. But the shave would likely be quite different, as the weight between a Trac II (especially with an all metal handle), and a light plastic disposable is going to be vastly different.

Still, if you can get him to try out the Trac II, he will probably get better shaves, as the Trac II is one of the best cartridge razors ever made. :thumbup1: It's the closest you can get to the shaving style of a DE from a cartridge, as the head is fixed.

On the other hand, the Good News disposables are less than a dollar each, which isn't that outrageous depending on how many shaves he gets per disposable.

Not that pricey but with the Trac II carts 6 for 1.25 at Dol Gen it could save him some grip in the long run if he likes the way it shaves :wink2:

Yes, it is essentially a disposable Trac II. I learned on the Trac II (introduced I think in '71 or '72?), I started shaving in about 1973.

There was a time also when I used nothing but the Good News, liked them a lot. Did that for maybe 2-3 years? You may end up disappointed, as your father may not want the Trac II handle either. If he's happy with his current tools, nothing wrong with that. Still try, but don't push too hard.

Have you suggested to him, getting away from the canned goo he's probably using? A proper soap and a decent brush may be something he's more open too...

He is STUBBORN :mad3: I have suggested that but he LIKES Barbasol :001_rolle
He wears a beard in winter so only shaves his neck and trims on his face but he is clean shaven in summer.
I was thinkin' the T2 handle might be a way to ease him into normal shaving but as you said he might not like it. His is a stubborn and fickle generation!

I went through a disposable phase and the Good News razors tore me up. The Schick Slim Twin seemed to be the best of the buncha at the time.

There may be subjects where a father is happy to take advice from a grown-up son, but I suspect that the best way to shave is typically not one of them. If he's satisfied, probably not worth rocking the boat.:001_cool:

On an unplanned overnight hospital stay this year, they gave me a couple of twin bladed Gillette disposables, which I guess had to be Good News. I used one of them, once, with the canned cream they gave me, to get a tolerable shave. Not as good as a DE, SE, or injector, but usable.
