Good instant lather?

I have tried a couple shaving cans (aka the infamous goo) and none of them are worth having. I was wondering if there are ANY good instant lather products. Traditional lather making is fun an all, but for those morning when I'm in a hurry, I gotta have something fast that works well.

I have no recent experience with aerosols, but I do have fond memories of a hot lather dispenser that heated the lather from cans. A novel idea at the time...thirty, forty years ago.

If I had to use a can, it would be Barbasol.

This comic taught me Barbasol is extremely flammable

I used to have colegate and barbasol, but always went with the barbasol for no particular reason. I don't count the time spent prepping lather as "significant."

How do the gels stack up against the cans? Are they generally better? If so, any recommendations?

Green Tube Proraso with a boar brush.

I bet I can lather my face in less than 30 seconds with Proraso and a boar brush. No need for goo. :thumbdown

I am not convinced using a brush with shaving cream/ shaving soap actually takes that much longer. I can whip up in an excellent lather in 2-3 minutes. Figured maybe a minute for cleanup, you are talking about adding perhaps 3-4 minutes onto your shave time.

If you are so time pressed that 3-4 minutes makes that much of a difference, I think you have something wrong with your routine.

To answer the question, Barbasol, and Aveeno are the only canned products I have found that are even halfway passable.

Definitely Barbasol. I frequently use it and am very satisfied with it's performance. Don't be stingy with it though, I find that you need to use a good amount in order for it to work well. I also heard the Burt's Bees shaving cream/gel is pretty good. Kinda pricey, I think it's about $8-9 for a tube of it, but it is an instant lather.

Kiss My Face works fine. Just slather on a layer of it,and shave it off.

No romance to it, but it does provide a layer of lube tween blade and face. Cheap too.

I did enjoy the Mach3 shave gel quite a lot in my time. I've used the Fusion gel... the Mach3 gel is better.

I forgot about that....

Seriously the picture of the pretty cougar is right. If 5 minutes makes a huge difference, you are doing it wrong.

+1 for kiss my face, I used it for the first time today, and for a quick lather I dont think even the goo can beat it. One pump from the bottle and 20s of swirling with a touch of water makes enough lather for 3 passes and then some! Give KMF a shot before you head back to the goo

There is a total of 3 instant foams that come to mind:

1. Proraso foam, not too bad
2. Barbasol, excellent stuff when I used it about 10 years ago
3. Noxzema, again great stuff although very difficult to get hold of.

To be fair though if you want quick lather my advice would be to use the following:

Palmolive shave stick with a good badger brush, whips up excellent lather and is cheap too. I don't use cans any more for a simple reason..... to quote the old phrase "they are evil... EVIL"!

Hope this helps

Gels and brushless creams are fine and compare well to some of their canned foam counterparts. This may not, to some, mean much in terms of absolute quality. However, if you have the time to work a gel into a lather, it doesn't take much more effort to make lather with a good cream and brush.

As to what is good, I would have you consider the following:

  • Nivea For Men Shave Gel
  • Anthony Logistics Shave Gel
  • Aveeno Shave Gel
Menscience makes a shaving formula that has been well received by the general population but I cannot vouch for its quality.
