What's new

Good day at the junk shop

Gentlemen,

Here is what I found today. All for $45.
4 Super Speeds
1 Ball End Tech
2 Open Combs
1 Old Spice mug

Here they are after a good scrub and polish.

I really like the way the silver plated open comb turned out. It was so tarnished it looked like someone painted it flat black. A little MAAS and a lot of elbow grease and it gleams.

I only want to keep one of the regular SS, the black handled SS, the gold Tech, and the silver open comb. I plan on PIFing the rest. So all you noobies stay tuned.

Well done Sir! Love that Single Ring (silver plated open comb), these are becoming my favorites. I am shaving with a different one each day this week.

Have you determined the manufacture year of that (or any others) yet?

The regular flare tips and the red tip are all 1957 vintage. I haven't bothered to look up the black handled on yet (it is coded M1). I assume it is mid 1960s. I have no idea what year the single ring is. It has Pat Jan 13 1920 upside down on the handle. The only other markings I can find are the Gillette diamond and MADE IN U.S.A. on the bottom of the head.

Other s can confirm (or refute), I think there was a last bunch made around (or just after?) 1921 that had no serial number, thus no date (if I recall correctly, this was part of King Gillette's trait of using up leftover parts rather than let them sit around the plant).

The earlier ones had serial numbers on the inner barrels of the bottom nut, and around or between 1911/1912 they moved the serial numbers to the top of the blade guard under the cap.

Regardless of numbers/years, very cool pieces all! (Black handle is a '62 BTW).

Lucky for you. The only antique store by me has no DE's. Only one SE, one Rolls, and some really junky looking straights.

I found the serial number on top of the bottom plate. It is 47511A. If I read the wiki right that makes it a 1924.

I'm lucky. Central Texas has a ton of little towns and they all seem to have antique stores. I found all of these in one shop outside of Geronimo, TX. It was the third store I visited today. I was just driving around the small towns outside of San Antonio.

I make that as a 1921 model (the last supposed to be made of the Single Ring, though again I think there was a batch made either un numbered and/or a bit later). Per the Wicki, 1-A to 863912A would be 1921.

Hoo boy. Red faced again . Matt, I made a "slight" error referring to the silver open comb as a Single Ring.

Looked at the pics again just now, and it smacked me right in the face. Look at the size of that sucker. Yep, a quick double check of the patent date information confirms it, that there is a Big Fellow. WAAY more valuable and collectible than the run of the mill Single Ring.

And based on the serial number and patent date, I presume it is of the "New Improved" variety (changed head style from the Old Type). They made both in 1921, I have one of each type from that year. But the patent date on the New Improved is the one that matches yours.

ETA: To confirm this for yourself, measure it head to toe. The Single Ring is about 3.25 inches. The Big Fellow is much fatter and beefier, and about 3.75 inches. Even better score!
