What's new

Good cream suggestions?

First off my skin is very sensitive. I use a no name brand Straight Shavette with Derby blades, will get a Parker soon... I'm half black half white, so my hair is a little thicker, but just overly sensitive.

I've tried the following, best top to bottom
Neutrogena Skin Defence - Doesn't lather enough, but is so slick, hardly ever cut myself
Proraso - Love the lather, not slick enough, couple cuts a shave
Kiss My Face - Dries out way too fast

Looking for something under $20 and keeps razor bumps away....Considering the following
  1. Taylor of Old Bond Street Almond Shaving Cream
  2. Taylor of Old Bond Street Eton College Shaving Cream Jar
  3. Face Skin Care
  4. Nivea For Men Sensitive Shaving
I do not use a brush or a bowl, just looking to dab and rub on my face.

You might get better lather if you use a brush? (Plus shaving brushes are cool)

Out if the ones you mention Eton College is great! Have you tries any soaps? i find i get more protection from most soaps. If you want something cheap, good for sensitive skin and great for face lathering you might try a Palmolive stick? Think you would need a brush though to get a proper lather though.

To get proper lather you need a brush. Otherwise look for a latherless cream like the Razorock shaving gels & lube (See HERE).
The creams you are looking at are designed to be used with a brush, so unless you plan on using one they are fairly useless.

pinkpony, you are prone to a condition called PFB ( Pseudo folliculitis Barbae) A common skin rash seen primarily in blacks. So be aware bumps are normal when you have a flare. This for your information will complicate shaving. Google this or see a dermatologist. If can be very bad. There is a whole slew of shaving recommendations, quite a vast array of ways to manage. On top of this I recommend florals. Rose and Lavendar for instance. Start of with Thayers rose witch hazel, with aloe and no alcohol. As an after shave. Then go with those creams that do not use chemicals. You may have to pay a bit more for a shaving cream, but it may be worth it. Again, your bumps you describe is an actual skin condition seen primarily in blacks. So look into what you can do regarding this. Treatment can be from shaving every other day to prevent. Small combs to pull hair out etc. Again, if bad will be a bear to manage. From your list you pick the almond will be a nice touch. I recommend the TOBS rose or lavender for your situation. Again if bad sometimes you may need to be treated by a dermatologist. It is not that bad to manage for your information. Have nice day my friend.Jimmy

AOS cream works just fine without a brush (though I prefer using a brush with it). The initial price is high, but you need very little for a good shave.

Cremo is typically available in drugstores and super markets, and while latherless, provides a decent shave--it is quite slick.

If you want to go brushless wont you have better success with shaving gel?
Also, lathering in the bowl uses much less cream than face lathering or straight rubbing on the face. If you still want to go ahead with rubbing cream in your face give Musgo Real a chance, it was developed to be able to be rubbed directly on the face and is lanolin overloaded. I'm sure others will attest to MR's skin conditioning.

That is a lot of potentially useful information if that is what I have. Maybe I will look into a dermatologist.

But first....I might have to get a brush...ughh...one more thing to buy and store. Why can't shaving be simple..

I just bought Nivea Sensitive Shaving Gel
And Neutrogena Razor Defence Shave Gel
Only bought because together they were $5 at a local Target

If these don't seem to do the trick either, I'll look into a brush and some of the suggested soaps. Thanks guys! I'll post a picture of what my face looks like in the next week. It's not terrible, just annoying.

You can also use a brush with Cremo, it makes a very nice lather with just a small amount. I could'nt find it locally, so I bought some from the fine folks at Westcoast Shaving. I find using a brush to whip it up and then applying it works much, much better than just smearing it on. And yes, it's very slick. It's quickly becoming my favorite.

Just because it may be too finicky for one does'nt mean it wont work great for another.

A good brush and Palmolive Classic shaving creme ... what else would one need? :wink2:

Seriously, I think you cannot beat the Palmolive creme for price / quality. Definitely worth a try, in my opinion!
