Golden Nib Knot Removal

I recently acquired a nice turned handle to which I installed a 22mm golden nib knot. The handle was bored for a 24mm but the 22 fit just fine.

I now regret my decision and want to put a 24mm knot in the brush. I used an epoxy to install the knot and had to use a fair amount as the knot was a little small.

Does anyone have experience removing knots without destroying the knot? I do not want to destroy the knot as it is sooo nice and will be great in another handle. I may just have to leave it in this handle, and find a new handle for a 24mm or 25mm knot.

Any suggestions?

I put some epoxy on a piece of wood and let it cure. Then I hit it with the heat gun for a few seconds and it softened up quite a bit.

I think that I could slowly heat the brush handle with a hair dryer and work the knot out.

Since epoxy forms a strong polymer, I figured heat would be a good method for loosening those bonds. Acetone and other stronger chemical baths would soften the epoxy as well but I do not want to expose the badger hair to the chemicals.

I think the heat will work... I will try and let you all know.

I dont think its coming out.

The ammount of heat needed to mess with the epoxy will probably mess with the hairs too.

Yeah, my epoxy liquifies at about 266° C. I don't think that my badger hair would like it that hot.

I am gonna just get a new handle for my 25mm UK Golden Nib Knot

I suppose the only other option would be injections down to the epoxy of acetone, but I am just gonna take the opportunity to get a new brush.

A very wise decision indeed! :001_smile This is the only way to be sure that you would have two nice brushes in the end...
