gold leafing/plating

Hi,

I am interested in the Dovo special tortoise shell razor, and was just curious about the gold. In your experience with this or other razors, how long does the gold plating/leafing stay on for?

They are plated. leafing is a totally different thing. As far as I'm concerned if you are buying it to use as say a sunday shaver you should be ok but for daily use I would avoid anything that's plated. It's a very thin coating and will wear. The more you use it the faster it wears, especially gold. Chrome or nickle are much harder so they last longer.

I tend to stay away from razors with gold wash, especially on the tang. Not a deal breaker per se, but it is fragile stuff. It comes off and blemishes easily.

What they said ^. I probably use a gold wash razor once a month just because I'd like to preserve the blade than use those. Even etching on the blade I avoid and have ordered new Thierrs Issard's with no etching and well worth the wait.

I have the Dovo Tortise-Shell you're talking about. I use it anywhere from everyday to a couple days a month depending on what I feel like using and I've not had any problems with the gold coming off. I've only had it since January and it's only touched strop and pasted strop though.

If it was a little more expensive I might care about it more, but I just use it because I enjoy it more than my Gold Dollar.
