What's new

Going round the bend..........

Well I've contributed what little knowlede I have about straight razor shaving, soap, strops etc. and I've made about 300 posts.

I contribute to forums to learn and advance my own knowledge but on this forum I find that the number of repeat questions detracts from knowledge advancement.

The repetition is banal and the inability of members to use the search facility is unbelievable.

There are some very knowledgeable members on this forum and I take my hat of to you, but repeating the same answers time after time just doesn't do it for me.

I at least do not intend to repeat the the same answers over and over and over..............

To each his own. I, for one, am proud of the fact that this forum isn't full of condescending "use the search function" posts. That, and I find occasional repetition to be a nice reminder at times.

I personally don't really find the search function to be all that effective. Maybe my use of key word is off but it's definitely easier and sometimes faster just to ask. IMO

In my opinion it's far more useful to point asking members to the stickies rather than just having them to search on their own. (Of course if you want to answer in your own words it's at least the same 'quality' if not better)

English, you say knowledge advancement. Why not contribute to the wiki?

+2 there!

I personally LIKE giving the advice. I suspect that many members feel the same way. I am always pleasantly surprised by the number of people who quickly jump to answer a noob question, even if it has been asked time and time again.

The noob is looking for information and answers on learning a task that is not really THAT easy, having to learn all about search functions first kinda takes away from the thrill of seeking and finding answers to your curiosity.

Besides, everybody thinks their hair is the toughest, or their skin is the most sensitive, and they would ask anyway, because the question they ask is, after all, just a little different from the one they read 10 minutes ago.

Just my opinion.

Sorry if my post sounds condescending I really don't wish to send that type of arrogant message.

I genuinely find the repetition to be just that.

Sometimes I see replies to questions that I know have been answered better in the past and I think what a waste that previous quality replies are replaced by lesser quality. I even feel that with some replies I have given.

I feel that a forum should ofcourse welcome newcomers and offer a hand of strong support. But many questions that are asked show that no effort has been put in at all by the newbee. That is wrong. I agree that a degree of repetition is refreshing but not questions that have been answered once on the same current posts page.

The search function IMO rarely works for me. Sometimes I hit a boatload of posts spot on to what I am looking for. Other times I have to scroll through countless posts to find something.

As someone posted here, it is nice we don't have the condescending "use the search function". Ive been on a few other forums and they can get really nasty about it.

My hats off to the many people at B&B. In two years of being on here I have not once been treated with the slightest disrespect. Everyone I have met here has been a complete Gentleman (or woman).

I would also like to add that if one feels that a question has been addressed better or more thoroughly in a previous thread. It'll be easier for you to find that exact example and simply post a link to that thread than it would be for a newb to go out searching for it. Just a suggestion.

A conscious decision had been made when this forum was started that we would not be "one of those forums" I am very pleased that the community has grown and maintains the value of this decision.

Using Google with B&B as the searched domain will usually help you find anything.

This could be resolved in a couple of ways. Noobs could be instructed to read all ninety thousand threads before being so selfish as to ask a question, or the OP could just scroll past a question that he knows has already been asked.

If I can link a post to an existing post I will do it. If I know it's there...

Google works very well most of the time if you are unable to search with B&B advanced search engine.

And whats better, fatboy or slim adjustable? Seriously though, if you see a noob asking a question that you remember being covered in a previous thread, just do what most people do and provide a link to that thread. Works pretty well and it's very little work for everyone.

as a recent noob, what i enjoyed about this forum was the ease of finding answers, most other forums (other subjects) a re always full of those how dare you ask that question, search the forum 2 years ago, kind of answers.

Given the amount of variables for all comers here, blade type matched with a particular razor, brush type matched with a particular soap etc etc its great to get a personal reply to queries. Having said that i can sure understand that others may find repetition a bore.

Please see my quote on this page, http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=1400361#post1400361

just a quick thought and i'm not trying to be rude about English's valid point, if you are not interested in new members queries don't look at them or just don't bother replying to them, there are others here who don't mind. (that sounds and reads awfully, i apologise)

+1 a gentlemen never sees assisting others as a burden.

I for one find the folks here on B&B to be what keeps me trying when I feel like giving up. If it weren't for the kindness and willingness to answer the dumb questions (over and over again) this forum would be fade away and I know I would surely be back to using cartridges.
