What's new

Going retro tomorrow!

Tonight I was cleaning out the space under the bathroom sink, and came across a can of Edge. I used Edge gel for my daily shaves for a lot of years before I discovered DE shaving.

I haven't used anything from a can since my first DE razor and badger brush came in the mail three years ago, but I'm curious about Edge. I'm going to use it tomorrow, and I don't know what to expect.

For all the comments we've rmade here about 'canned goop', I don't remember anybody saying anything about Edge. How do you guys rate it? Decent? Adequate? Lousy? Anyone want to guess how good, or bad, my shave will be?

I suspect that with the DE techniques you have developed, the shave will be better than it was when you were using it pre-DE.
Having said that, I still think canned goo sucks, and that includes Edge, with its artificial electric green snot to bubbles transition!

+1 and then some!!

For today's shave, the shaving equipment was:

Cream: Edge shaving gel
Brush: The 2006 Badger &Blade Limited Edition Finest Silvertip by Edwin Jagger
(How's THAT for an odd couple?)

Razor: Dovo Special 5/8 tortoise-shell straight razor

For prep, I lathered with my usual vdh glycerin shave soap and a Tweezerman brush. I was testing the Edge for its usefulness in shaving, but not for its abilities in prep.

A while back I watched a straight razor video on YouTube where the guy used a brush to lather up from a can of Edge. If I hadn't seen the video I wouldn't have thought of using a brush with this stuff.

And the results:

It's okay. Just okay, nothing more and nothing less. Adequate slickness and cushioning. Nothing was exceptional, and there was nothing missing.

I had no problems with lack of lubrication, and the lather didn't vanish by the end of the pass like Williams' does. My face didn't feel dried out.

Lathering with a brush was tricky. Edge turns into a lather when you smear it on your wet face. It didn't whip up well in my lathering bowl. I think I could learn to lather this stuff well if I practiced a bit, but I don't intend to.

Conclusions:

In my pre- B&B days I thought that Edge was by far the best of the canned products. From today's shave I would say that it's a decent product. I like other products a lot better, but this would do fine if I didn't have anything else.

Now it goes back under the sink.

I've used gel with my DE on a few occasions when I was in an extreme hurry (shaved in the shower). It worked fine but I've found that soaking the brush under the running water and then face lathering with a cream takes maybe 30 seconds to a minute longer.

I still have one can of gel on hand but the rest of them went to my brother.

I did try using shaving foam eons ago when I switched from an electric to the Mach3. I kept cutting myself. The gel seemed to work a lot better. Still not nice cold from the can on the face first thing on a winter morning.
