Going ATG with water rather than lather

This may have been discussed before, but I don't know how to search the specifics, so I'll raise the question.

I'm a relative newbie (straights for a couple of months, every day), and I've become very proficient with WTG passes. Most of my face doesn't seem to benefit from XTG, but for a great shave, I need to follow up my WTG passes with selective ATG and touchups.

When I shave ATG with a straight, I find it relatively easy to do the pass and very specific touch ups with water on my face (after rinsing) rather than lather. A layer of lather makes it hard to get the shallow angle (maybe 10 or 15 degrees) that seems to make sense for ATG and touch ups. With water rather than lather, I can easily see where I'm shaving (particularly for touchups).

Have others found this to be the case as well? Am I simply lacking in technique, or does it make sense to just have a wet face for touchups? In theory, I'd LIKE to have the cushion of lather for ATG, but I'm having a very hard time getting the proper angle and seeing what I'm doing when there is lather on my face. AND, I'm not getting any noticeable razor burn with the way I'm doing it. It just feels 'wrong' to shave my face without any lather on it!

Any advice? Can anyone point me somewhere to get assistance on perfecting my ATG passes, with lather or without?
