Goats Milk and earth clays shaving soaps

I posted another thread about Oliver's soaps which seems to have disappeared. He had offered great shaving pucks using a goats milk and kaolin clay base.

Well while searching the net as well as this forum for anything on Olivers I came across some comments about Etsy.com which is a site for artisans to sell handmade goods. Several had mentioned being very pleased with items bought there including shaving soaps, especially some all natural offerings. Well I did a search there and found an outfit called 1846HouseSoaps which is run by a semi-retired RN who is a soapmaker. Found her blog and twitter pages which show her goods being sold at some local farmer's markets. Her 5 oz shaving pucks are described thusly: "Moisturizing goat milk & shea butter soap, enriched with Vitamin E, and & natural clays for a silky smooth shave. A rich lotion like lather gives great razor glide without irritation." She listed a twofer special so I've ordered a cake of Lavender, Orange, & Patchouli, plus one in Sandalwood Vanilla. We'll see how these work out :001_smile

I'm still a big fan of glycerin soaps from Mama Bear and enjoy Honeybee Sue's shea butter, but those pucks I used to get from Olivers were quite special too, hence this hopeful purchase.

There are all kinds of interesting things listed on Etsy, aren't there. Will you post a review of the soaps when you've had a chance to use them?

mblakele,

That post you linked was mine too from earlier this evening. It didn't disappear, Olivers has :) Separate topic really as it asks if anyone knows anything about what happened to Olivers. I did some digging and think I have now found the eBay sellers name for them. I've e-mailed them to ask about Olivers. We'll see what develops there too.

BTW that puck picture above is from the Etsy sellers listing here 1846HouseSoaps shaving twofer Normal disclaimer here.....I have zip connections and just found her this evening to place my first order.

Received a very nice communication from Lynn Anne indicating my soaps are being shipped out today. She further clarified what she uses in the way of clays to include bentonite, kaolin, morrocan red, and/or french green. Which depends on the particular fragrance or essential oils soap you look at.

I guess with two of you now posting this it seems my phraseology is lacking. No, the post was never lost.... it's Oliver's soap that seems to have disappeared.

KittensAndRainbows,

The key to hard soaps is the formulation and soapmaker. I've had lousy hard soaps of all types including glycerine and shea butter as well. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater as there are indeed some fine goats milk shaving soaps to be had :001_tt1:

The soaps arrived this afternoon. I had selected
--Lavender, Orange, & Patchouli (Herbal Citrus)
--Sandalwood Vanilla
Both are sizable pucks weighing 5.2 ounces as opposed to the more common 3 to 3.5 ounce sizes from other purveyors. Their scents, still in their wrappers, are very pleasant and not overpowering. I had intended to use one of the pucks the morning after receipt but as outlined in this thread

I'm on the sidelines for awhile

Threw caution to the wind figuring my face has had enough time to recover from the allergic reaction I experienced to T&H Almond cream and proceeded to try out the herbal citrus puck from 1846 House Soaps.

I slapped in a new NOS Schick Platinum Plus teflon coated injector blade into my trusty PAL razor. Then half-filled the sink with hot water, scuttle, razor, and Omega boar (a monster with soaps!) and took my morning shower.

Ready to shave I attacked the puck with the Omega to whip up some lather. I obtained rich results but not in copious quantities that some other soaps produce (a hallmark of the defunct Oliver's). The soapmaker's description of "lotion like lather" sells short the foaminess that can also be achieved as I did this morning. This product is made with both goats milk and shea butter and my lathering impressions are that it resembles many of the shea butter products say like that from Honeybee Spas. The Oliver's was quite unusual in several respects with its high goats milk and kaolin clay content.

The injector glided effortlessly over my face cushioned nicely by this lather. It has earth clays in it but not nearly as much as the now unavailable Oliver's soap. So it is slick but not super slick if that makes sense. It does the job very well without leaving that "slickiness" feel on your face post shave that the Oliver's did.

So from just one shave I'd say that this product falls squarely between a full out goats milk soap and a shea butter one offering a very nice compromise. The soapmaker looks to have also been conservative with scent which is a good thing despite how nice this Lavender, Orange, & Patchouli (Herbal Citrus) combo smells. I prefer the scent of any shaving soap or creme to dissipate allowing my aftershave or cologne to work without interference. This one hits that mark perfectly with a nice scent during the shave but later its gone. It is a very pleasant, solid performing, inexpensive puck soap (5.2 oz @ $6) that doesn't overdo any ingredient or attribute. One that I can easily see buying again when replenishment is needed. (www.1846housesoaps.etsy.com) Where would I rate this then? A half notch below Mama Bear's glycerins and a notch above Honeybee Spas shea butter both of which are good company to be in :)
