Glycerin question...

Gents,

I recently purchased some glycerin at a drug store, and wanted to know how to use it effectively. Any ideas??

Ive heard some gents talking about using it to make an uberlather. Does it just make the soap or cream slicker while shaving?? Any advice would be appreciated!!

Glycerin is an awesome shaving product. Most creams and soaps already contain some glycerin. However, by adding a few more drops to your cream before bowl lathering you can enhance the uberlather result.

The other use is to apply about a quarter size amount in your palm, then directly to the wet face before applying the cream. This is a skin protector similar to pre-shave oils, except that it is water soluble. You will need to reapply before each pass to maintain the benefit.

Enjoy

+1 I always add a couple of drops to my shave cream. Recently, I have been using it as a preshave, too. Very slick!

3 drops makes proraso lather up nicer, 4 drops makes it superlather though! It also keeps my skin hydrated, without glycerin the same soap makes my skin feel taught and even slightly wrinkly.

I use as a pre-shave this way: wash face, apply a few drops and work it into whiskers, immediately apply lather. That's it. Results are a more comfortable shave and healthy skin.

same as the others - a few drops into the bowl for nice slick lather.

but my main question is - what is it used for outside of shaving? I have a heck of a time finding it in the drug store as where would one look? Normally it's with the anti-itching creams, but most places here in Honolulu don't seem to have it anywhere, even though the pharmacists folks swear they do, just not where to find it...

It can be used as a moisturizer if mixed one-to-one with water before being applied. It is also commonly used as a laxative; I think it usually comes in little ampules for that use. Sometimes drugstores carry the bottles of glycerin close to the medications for constipation, etc.

I add 3-4 drops to my VDH Deluxe Shave Soap for great Überlather. Additionly, although Clubman (Citrus Musk is my one & only 'go-to' AS / Cologne), can be drying upon my face and body, the addition of about 10 drops of glycerine per 6oz bottle greatly increases the moisturizing and toning aspects and 'kicks' this aftershave-cologne 'up a notch'.

I find it in CVS next to the face creams and the facial wipe pads for women. only ever bought it once though, it lasts too long to be replaced often.

I didn't know this so I did a bit of searching and found this:

What is the use of glycerine?
Glycerine, (COH)3H5, or C303H8, is a 3-carbon alcohol, aka glycerol. (1-carbon alcohol is methanol, 2-carbon is ethanol). It is non-volatile and intensely hygroscopic (water-loving), and can be rinsed off any surface with ordinary water.

It has recently been found to hasten cell maturation and suppress inflammation.

Here is a partial list of its uses:
Reduces or eliminates any skin disturbance, from psoriasis to bug bites or burns. Apply the pure Glycerin USP form. Feels oily, vanishes into the skin in about 10 minutes (signals cells to open transport channels). Cuts off pain and itching by quieting injured cells, not a "nerve blocker".

Doubles healing speed, cuts scarring in half.

Carries most materials mixed with it into the skin, especially water. Mixed with water, an excellent moisturizer. (Principal component of most commercial preparations.)

Pure form kills all bacteria on contact by instantly drawing the water out of them.

Eliminates halitosis by killing sulfurous bacteria on back of tongue if swished and gargled. (Tastes slightly sweet.)

De-congest nasal passages by rubbing a few drops of glycerine-water mix just inside the nostrils. Takes about 15 minutes to soften blockage and quiet agitated nasal passages, opening the airway.

A teaspoon or two orally, or commercial glycerine suppositories, are a mild laxative.

Softens and removes calluses.

Being researched as a cancer cell "quieter", to prevent cells from proliferating.

Other than the above, some long-distance runners have used it as a drink for stamina, but not everyone's stomach enjoys such a large amount all at once.

Helps thicken skin weakened by pregnazone treatments for rheumatism, Parkinson's, etc.

It is also used in foods and toothpaste as a sweetener and blending agent. Used to lubricate food handling machinery where avoiding oil contamination of product is necessary.

It is a major component of numerous expensive soaps.

When making uberlather, I simply put a few drops of glycerin right into a bowl before bowl lathering. The glycerin apparently allows the mix to hold more water or something along those lines - all I know is that it helps to build luxurious lather when making uberlather. I have tried it with just a cream or even with tallow soaps and can't say that the effect is as noticeable as compared to adding it into a superlather mix. More than 5 or so drops diminish lather quality in my experience (makes the lather collapse).

The second thing I use glycerin for is AS mixes. I tend to mix aftershave splashes, witch hazel, and aftershave balms together in a bottle. Sometimes, to make the mix more hydrating, I add in a dollop of glycerin.

I add a few drops to make uberlather but also use it as a pre-shave as Noah described above. I feel it is a very effective pre-shave product, particularly for the price of $2 per 50 gallon drum.

I've done a little searching and I see a lot of glycerine sold with additives. What brand are you all using when you add it to your lather, and does it have any effect if it has the additives?

In the chemist where I bought my bottle (albeit in the UK and not in Honolulu) it was stocked on a shelf with the syrups and medicines for sore throats and coughs. On the bottle it states its main use, after mixing it with water, is to help soothe a sore throat or it can be applied to the skin to relieve rough and chapped skin.

The idea of some people using it as a laxative and some runners using it for increased stamina doesn't really seem to sit well together....
