Glock 19 gen 3 or gen 4 as first handgun?

Hey guys,

Im in the process of getting my pistol permit, and have been shopping around guns for a while. I have settled of the Glock 19 9mm, but can decided between the Gen 3 or Gen 4.

I heard the gen 4 was having ejection issues for a while, but dont know if Glock has resolved the problem or not.

Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would get the Gen 3, you can send your Gen 4s back to glock but there is no backward compatibility either. the Gen 3 is a better gun.

I have a gen 4 with no issues. The problem Glock was having was fixed long ago. No real reason to believe the Gen 3 is better, they're both excellent.

Personal preference. Some guys like the 3's grip better. I like the interchangeable grip on the 4. No ejection issues with my gun after several thousand rounds. It just works.

I wouldn't hesitate to pick up either, that being said the Gen 4 offers some advantages if you are left handed, or have small/larger than normal hands.

I'd take an m&p over the glock as the ergonomics are way better for my hands. The G19 is legendary and is a fine weapon, get either, but if you do get the gen 4 make sure it has the newer recoil spring, as there were problems with early gen 4 springs.

I have a Gen 3 G23, very similar to the G19. Gen 4 isn't available in my state. It is a fantastic firearm. Simple and intuitive in design and constructed well. A bagillion mods and upgrades available for it (if that interests you). I agree with Kent, in that you may as well get the latest model as in theory, its their best.

But, check out this video. This guy is THE Youtube authority on Glocks. His name is Hickock45, and this video is a full comparison of the different generations of the G19!

Get the Gen4 if it already has the 30274 ejector and 0-4-3 RSA (Recoil Spring Adapter). Please feel free to ping me on this; I've got a bit of experience with Gen4 Glock 9mms.

+1 on this. While I own a Gen2 G19, a Gen 3 G23, G30, there is no reason to pick a Gen 3 G19 over a Gen4 unless you are just getting a really good price on the gen 3.

Go with the Gen4.

I'm a lefty and had to get the Gen 4 19. It worked perfectly for a year and a few thousand rounds, then started ejecting erratically. A few rounds per mag in the forehead, some weak ejections, some good ones.

New ejector and the free RSA through the recall program fixed everything up nice. Though part of me thinks it was the awesome detail strip cleaning I did along with it, which got a bunch of gunk off the extractor. Will see how it goes for the rest of the year.

I did some checking for my own interest. Apparently Glock isn't even going to waste their time and money getting the Gen4 rostered for CA. Bummer! I say definitely get it, since you at least have the option!

If you have the chance, try both. I did and decided against the Gen 4 only because of the stippling of the grip. After 50 rounds my hand was sore, and this was not the case with Gen3. I think the initial issues are fixed for some time now. Both are great guns, though.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm taking my pistol permit class tomorrow and hopefully will be trying out the gen 3 and gen4 for soon.

i have a gen 2 g22 and a gen 3 g19 .. when i bought my g26 i had the option of going 3 or 4 , i went with 3 cause i was already used to the grip on the 3's and didnt want to end up going with a diff setting on the 4's .. if it was my first glock id go with a 4 ! the price diff was only $30 where i got mine and the 4's come with 3 mags and the 3's only 2 .. so if i bought another mag for the 3 i was already at the price of the 4 ..lol

I was torn for a bit between the two and decided on the gen3 for my G19. Now I'm glad I chose it purely off feel. For me, I think the rougher grip on the gen4 might loose its appeal after a few hundred rounds at the range. Again, some may prefer it. At the end of the day, they will both be great guns.

I just put a Hogue HandAll grip on my G23. Big improvement in comfort as well as feeling secure in the hand. It's an easy on/off no mod $9 upgrade :)
