Glasses by Warby Parker - if you wear prescriptions, READ THIS.

In GQ this month, there was a blurb about a company described as the netflix of eyeglasses.

The idea is, in theory, that you can have up to 5 frames shipped to you FREE OF CHARGE to try on and then return. Decide which one you like (or none!), click checkout, and 95 dollars and a few days later you get a nice pair of glasses delivered with all the nice UV / AR / antiscratch / glare coatings included.

I called them yesterday in order to clarify a few things (my script is -4/-6, so I usually go polycarb or high index), and had a great chat with the guy on the line. Turns out they were in no way prepared for the business boom that GQ caused - the demand has been huge, and they're trying to keep up with the 'try at home' part of their business, so there's a bit of a wait to get your frames to try on. i wound up just ordering a pair of the Nedwin style - they have a full refund including shipping if you don't like them, so I thought there was very little risk involved.

Total cost (with my high-index lenses) for frames+lenses etc is usually around 500 for me per pair of glasses, and today I checked out at 95 dollars. I'm psyched. Just thought I'd share!!

(I'm in no way affiliated with the site, at all, except for the fact that I just bought the glasses. If I keep the frames I'll post pics after I receive them!)

from the "our story" section of their site-
A New Concept in Eyewear.

Warby Parker was founded with a rebellious spirit and a lofty objective: to create boutique-quality, classically crafted eyewear at a revolutionary price point.

A collaboration between four close friends, Warby Parker was conceived as an alternative to the overpriced and bland eyewear available today. Prescription eyewear simply should not cost $300+. The industry is controlled by a few large companies that have kept prices artificially high, reaping huge profits from consumers who have no other options. By circumventing traditional channels and engaging with our customers directly through our website, Warby Parker is able to provide higher-quality, better looking prescription eyewear for under $100.

We meticulously crafted our first collection of 27 limited run styles, plus one monocle, using only the finest custom acetates and materials. The Warby Parker aesthetic is vintage-inspired, with a fashion forward twist - and every pair is custom fit with anti-reflective, polycarbonate prescription lenses.

Available exclusively through the Warby Parker website, our glasses retail for $95.

Eyewear with a Purpose.

We believe that everyone has the right to see. Unfortunately, millions of people around the world today don’t have access to proper vision care. To help address this problem, Warby Parker partners with renowned non-profits, such as RestoringVision.org, to deliver one pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair that we sell. In doing so, we enable you to share the gift of vision with someone who can’t see today and give them the opportunity to read, to work and to live a fuller life.

Wow, that is awesome! I was just stressing about how much it was going to cost to get new lenses in my old frames. Now I can get a whole new pair of glasses. Thanks for the excellent info!

I really hope they start offering sunglasses. :) If this works out, I'm gonna so get a few more pairs in other colors and styles.

It would be great if they could do sunglasses too. Some of those frames really lend themselves to tinted lenses. Or even if they did transition lenses for a better price than the local brick and mortars, I'd give them a try.

There are a number of online retailers of glasses that are even cheaper (Sub $50) including all the coatings. However, that is the first I have heard of a try it at home program. Very cool idea, and still a bargain price compared to brick and mortar stores.

I got my glasses -- memory titanium rimless frames with high index lenses and all the coatings -- for $51 from Optical4Less. I have been very happy with these glasses. They are better quality than anything I ever got from the eye doctor's office at a fraction of the price. The closest I could find to an equivalent pair at a local shop was $300 just for the frames, then another $100 plus for the lenses. Just make sure you get your prescription entered correctly and the ordering process should go pretty smooth.

I need that home trial because of the size of my head. It's massive:sad:.

Thank you. I actually need a new pair of frames.

This was good. I jsut read the ad on the website for the monocle.

I'd love to know the time it takes everyone from the moment of ordering to receipt of the frames - I ordered mine yesterday.

.... i think the last time I felt this impatient, it was for the irisch moos. :)

I recently purchased my glasses @ Great Glasses - they offer a 3 for 1 deal. I bought a pair of designer Burberry glasses and got two pairs free. You can also choose cheaper glasses and get 3 pairs for $95 if you like. The deal mentioned by the OP is NOT really that good, sorry.

Btw, I'm not affiliated with the company I mentioned either, just a customer.
