Glass straights?

I've been curious If it would be possible to make a glass straight razor. I've seen the glass scales but I am talking about the blade itself.

dumb question?

At least its different from the ceramic razor question that seems to crop up every three months or so.

But the answer is still no. If you can't make a knife out of it, theres no hope of making a razor out of it.

I beg to differ on the knife part wikipedia. You can make a knife, then shouldn't you be able to make a razor? Maybe someone could fill me in.

And the diamond, I see no reason why it wouldn't hold an edge, but I bet it would be a pain to sharpen.

You linked me a ceramic knife. The question was about a glass razor. I don't see the confusion.

And yes, even though you can make a knife out of it, it doesn't mean you can make a razor out of it. But first you need the knife. Then we can talk razor.

All that said. Obsidian razors have existed throughout history. And obsidian is pretty similar to glass. Being volcanic glass IIRC. Either case, you don't want to shave with that.

I misread your comment. Sorry for my confusion.

glass scales, what a great idea!!!

my brother-in-law is a glass artist in training... hmmm... that's got me thinking! :thumbup1:

.

They make knives out of obsidian but they are for decoration only. To get glass to an edge that would shave well would make it too brittle. Chipping would be a big problem.

Aside from steel, and assuming that price is no object, what other options are actually viable for razor making? I would imagine that most of the precious metals are too soft, some of the specialty metals too hard, most other materials unable to hold an edge at that thinness. Any suggestions?

Ceramics is theoretically possible, but in practice... it hasn't happened and smart people have tried really really hard.

How about plasma? I think you could have one in which the blade could be extended and also the actual colour of the blade could be chosen by the person who made it. These blades would not be for everyone and indeed one would require some natural talent and years of training. :thumbup1:

We need someone to go to Adega for some crystals.

yes, glass razors ARE made, they just have another name: microtome knife. You think you can get STEEL scary sharp? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I've used these way back in another century for their design purpose, but in size and shape they resemble a slightly thick "wedge" style straight razor blade with no handle. Figure out how to hold them, you could definitely shave with.

Our ancestors made obsidian knives, and they were not for show.

The production problem with a glass razor blade or knife blade is that in order to get that superior sharp edge, the glass has to be fractured (knapped) and it is the meeting place of two intersecting fracture planes which produces the edge. It will have a random curvature to it. Modern technology may have gotten around this, it is beyond my ken.

Have fun trying, though.
