Giving up on vintage?

Lately I've been thinking about selling all my vintage razors on the BST. I was thinking about purchasing the Merkur 12C and making it my primary razor. Of course I would have to keep an injector for my SE needs.

Has anyone else had this feeling? I'd like to stick with one razor for the rest of my life. Keep it simple.

I came to this realization years ago. I enjoy my modern Trumpers and Merkur razors more than vintage. I sold all my vintage razors years ago.

I'm the opposite, I thought about selling my DE89L and keeping only my vintage razors. As was mentioned above I figured as soon as it was gone I would wish I had it back so I decided against it.

I've weeded out all but my most treasured vintage razors, and I don't shave with the ones I still have. My rotation consists mainly of a Muhle R89 and a Feather All-Stainless. Sometimes I throw a Merkur 1904 closed comb into the mix. I like to look at the old stuff and shave with the new stuff.

I used to think about it but after using a Merkur Progress and 37C I am noticing that the chrome plating is flaking off and my Progress alingment is going. I decided to switch over to my Gillettes, and I got to thinking that some of these razors are between 35-85 years old and they are still solid and mechanically sound performers. Whereas, my Merkur's are only 2-3 years old. I would suggest that at the very least select your top 3 or 5 vintage razors aside and sell the rest if you must just in case you experience what I have. I don't see vintage Gillettes going down in price anytime in the near future. Just my two cents YMMV.

Although I like having way more razors than I need, the minimalist approach is understandable too. For me it would be two razors rather than one, "just in case" one broke, or was lost.

If you were to go with just one razor, though, why couldn't it be your best vintage one? Or are you already sure that the 12C would be better?

Don't do it, you'll be sorry. I have found that more often than not interests tend to be cyclical. Go ahead and get a Merkur, and when you find the one you think will last you the rest of your life, box up all your vintage razors and put them in a closet. Eventually your interests will come back to vintage razors and you'll be glad you didn't get rid of them.

I would at least buy the razor and try it out before deciding to get rid of the ones you already have.

Cyclical is right, I was on a slant kick for a while, but now I am back to my almost forgotten Gillette Diplomat and have gotten a couple great shaves. All part of the fun for me.
