What's new

Giving my old Satchel a much need spa day

This old friend and I have been sharing life for more than 3 decades at this point and this week end was the first time I actually spent time taking care of it.

My dad bought it for me when I entered high school back home. It served me well for 3 years of high school, 5 years of post high school study, countless interview and it even carried my paperwork on the day I immigrated to the US in April 2007.

When it comes to abuse, you name it. It got it. Anything short of a hurricane or tornado was thrown at it. Overloaded ? You bet. Rain, sleet snow, of course it got it. Forgotten somewhere and found a day later ? Of course. Travelling on 4 continents ? Yes it did. Being forgotten for the last 10 years in the back of a hot Texas closet ? Unfortunately it happened. And last but not least . What would appear to be Mold.

I am so sorry old friend, I treated all of my ex girlfriends better than you for sure.

So armed with some saddle soap, a brush or two, some gloves and the recently purchased mink Oil, I went at it.

Washed it was. Air drying last night it rested on a chair and this afternoon, a solid coat of mink oil, and then another one as the first was absorbed as fast as I applied it. A bit of a brush session and the brass lock fixed, I guess it is good for another 30 years. I shall pay more attention to it in the years to come. Not that I have any inclination to go back to school, but well , I kept it all along, I am sure someone will be happy to find it at goodwill when my kid will dump it there after I pass and on its next life it will serve someone else well again.

That looks great. I did the same thing with my ball glove a week ago. I was going to buy a new one but I think they stink. They look and feel cheap.
