Giving holidays a bad name, or not?

There's good and bad in everyones life.
Few on the planet would come away unscathed when faced with the vitriolic "get 'em" inspection we are capable of witnessing today.
Fortunately for the vast majority of us, we have done nothing of significance in our lives that would thrust us into the spotlight of such scrutiny.
MLK was an amazing man whose contributions to civil rights advancement is unquestionable.
All I am doing is encouraging people to look at the historical documents. I don't want to argue or promote for or against MLK. Just to encourage people to do their own research based on primary resources.

I would think that if you wanted to neither promote for or against MLK, that would best be served by not posting at all in a thread with the specific purpose of showing respect to the man.

As well as unmatched. He did what he did knowing he was putting himself in the cross hairs of a LOT of different evil people and organizations. I cannot imagine how he just lived his life in the midst of constant danger. Think about it for a minute. Just one minute....... How he wasn't assassinated earlier is the real question.

I mean no disrespect, but I truly believe that people need to research the people we promote. If their lives are truly beyond reproach, then there is no harm in doing so. Either way, it will give a balance to why we celebrate their lives. If you disagree, it is all good. We are allowed to have differences of opinions.

I’m stumped
Put aside who he is or isn't, having a sale on a holiday that is set aside for a individual just does not seem right.
I can't speak for where you live but here you will see another sale even just a few weeks later after the big public holiday sale.
Most times there's better deals to be had later as well.

It always stuck in my craw that we lumped Washington and Lincoln together when I was a lad to make a three day weekend. Columbus day. Oops, should not have mentioned THAT guy.

We don't even TEACH our kids anymore about the SIGNIFICANCE of these folks. Bound to hurt someone's feelings. Golly, I wish I could have lived such a simple life that I had to go looking for something to be insulted by.

I read these simple little biographies of all the presidents as a wee lad, probably 5th grade, for extra credit, AND because I was even then a little nerd. Of course, none of them mentioned slavery, that was saved for around the 7th or 8th grade, when my mind was more ready to begin to understand what a horrible thing it is to OWN a human being.

Now the poor teachers spend 90% of their time trying to control behavior. I sincerely do not know how they can do it every day, especially with Covid in the classroom!

Everyone: buy lunch for a teacher. I was a nurse; everyone appreciated me, lol. The poor teacher is probably polling slightly higher than the US Senate right now. So, so sad.

Thanks @Captain Pre-Capsize for bringing some reflection and remembrance about. And thanks @FarmerTan for a majorly dumb post that really shifted the focus from the tasteless commercialism to the man and his message. And @luvmysuper , that was a thoughtful and gentlemanly reaction.
I'm going to have to do a PIF this week. I got stuff I probably bought with dead presidents on the last president day sale around here somewhere.

On the lookout for a purse
A lot of folks don't know why they have the day off on any given holiday other than Christmas, New Year's and Thanksgiving, nor do they care.

And I'll bet you a dollar against a donut that more than half of the adults in the USA couldn't give you an explanation of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

MAYBE 75% could tell you the date of New Years. And New Year's Eve. Maybe.

I used to laugh at the Tonight Show bits where Jay Leno showed us all how stoopid people were. Jay Walking one was called. I used to laugh. Then I realized: these absolutely clueless, oxygen thieving MORONS had the right to vote! Then I became convinced that I would do any legal job to be certain any child I ever procreated would not be going to a public skool with these knuckle draggers.

I don't think you intentionally mean disrespect, and no ones life is beyond reproach.
No one.
The sole issue is timing.
I think it's inappropriate to bring up character flaws in a thread specifically posted to highlight someones achievements just as it would be to stand up at someone's funeral and say "Ya'll are saying a lot of nice things about him, but you know - Bob was a jerk at times, and he never paid me back the 20 bucks he owed me."
We do indeed have the right to different opinions, and the ability to express them.
Having the ability doesn't mean we have the right to express them as we see fit in someone elses house.
The First Amendment prevents the government from infringing upon your right to free speech, it doesn't apply to private individuals or to a privately owned forum like B&B.

No worries. We all have various opinions and ideas.

You are showing your age! Doughnuts (PS that's the proper spelling, eh) cost at least a dollar nowadays. You can probably get a pamphlet about inflation at the Five And Dime.

Youtube search "Rick Mercer talking to Americans" will give you a few laughs ...

Ha! My wife says "dollars to doughnuts" frequently and I respond about the way you, D4, did here!
