Give Me a Grade

Triple Milled Soap, Omega 10066 Boar, Bowl Lather. How am I doing? How do I make it better?

It looks fine - but how does it perform? Performance - not looks - is what counts. What works for me may not work for you.

Something to keep in mind. The so called "lather porn" pics you see of the big, fluffy, airy lather aren't necessarily what will give you the very best shave.

I tend to prefer a lather with less air than what's in your pic. A thicker, shiny, non fluffy lather is usually what I'm going for.

Do experiment a bit and see what works best for you.

Something like this pic that was posted by another forum member here is what I prefer:

Yes performance is what counts and how a lather looks can be deceiving. With that said your lather pic looks just like the lather I whipped up last night with my Semogue OC boar and Stirling Executive Man shave soap. :001_smile

Status grade: Cool Whip!

Gimme wet, slick, airless, slightly thick. The opacity for me is usually just enough to hide my skin tone.

This particular batch really felt too dry and lost slickness quickly. After the first pass, I ended up having to wet my skin.

I've got some Stirling on it's way. I am really looking forward to trying it out!

Okay you've got me curious. What fragrance did you choose?
Black Cherry, I love all things Cherry.

That's one I haven't tried. It sounds very nice. :001_smile I have several others besides the Sharp Dressed Man and they are all excellent performers.

Welcome aboard!

The lather photo looks good to me, but also like it was created for a photo. As others have said the 'proof is in the pudding.' How does your lather perform for you? That is really all that counts

Hey PK,

When lathering, I perform a "slickness test". I face lather but I'm sure it can be adapted. When I think the lather "looks" done, I check it by running my brush across the lather on my face. If the brush meets resistance, it does not have enough water. If the brush moves quicker than I would have thought (it almost accelerates), then I know my lather is properly hydrated. To be honest, sometimes I do it on both cheeks and both sides of the neck to ensure proper distribution as well.

Using this method I always get slick, hair popping lathers that don't dry out. Unless I am using Mitchell's, but that is another thread entirely! For a bowl latherer, you could probably adapt it by putting some on your face or possibly using your palm (if sensitive enough).

Good luck! JM

Thanks for the tips. I am going to try my luck at face lathering as well. Lots to learn.
