Gillette Super Speed

Hi,

I have a question about a 1955 Gillette Super Speed that I recently purchased from ebay, complete with the original case and a 6 blade dispenser. I was wondering if the razor can be stored in the case with the blade still in the razor, or will the blade rub and grind against the case and make it dull?

I have tried to watch if the blade actually makes contact with the case, but the gap into the part of the case where the head of the razor rests is too narrow for me to visually ascertain whether this is the case or not (no pun intended).

Here's a picture of my acquisition. It's not of the best quality as it's taken with a phone cam:

I wouldn't think it could hurt the case. If any part of the head contacts the case, it'll be the guard bar, which extends beyond the blade.

I never keep a blade in my razor except for shaving.

I agree with one minor addition. After each shave I clean the blade and razor in really hot water and totally dry then re-install the blade. I use the blade for 3 days and toss it. For long term storage I would NEVER store a blade in a razor. If you decided to show your beautiful razor to a friend, etc. and they cut themselves and it became infected you could be in world of hurt legally.

Thanks for the advice regarding the legal implications of showing a "loaded" razor to a friend who may cut himself on it, but I'm in Norway, and things haven't gotten quite as out of hand here, yet... *knock on wood*.
I do however consider travelling to the US with a banana peel, slip on it outside someones property and become rich ;)

Thats a nice score! If you dont mind me asking, what was the winning bid?

I dont store the blade in the razor! Mainly because i dont use the same razor everyday!

Come to my place and we will split the ill-gotten loot.

Back in the day, I would have kept the razor in it's case until it broke and then I would have kept the razor on the sink/drawer like they are found in most estate sales. I am not old enough to have done that with a red tip, but I certainly did it with a super adjustable.

Today, I only use a case for displaying/storing the razor - when I'm using a different one for instance. If you only had the one razor, I (personally myself YMMV) still wouldn't keep the razor in the case. Nice ones are getting harder to come by and the fact that this one survived almost 60 years is a testament to somebody taking very good care of the case/razor and not to the plastic case's durability.

Pristine red tips w/ case are really quite nice looking. Good score!

Thanks for the input. I will keep the plastic case in a seperate place, and maybe get a nice razor holder for the razor.

:wink2:
All joking aside though, one could potentially cut themselves on a 'loaded' razor. For what its worth the blades will be more prone to rusting and other damage while inside the razor too, if just sitting around for display purposes. In any case, Nice set!

Don't forget to go to McDonald's and spill hot coffee on yourself. Big time lawsuit. It really happened a long time ago.
