Gillette Super Adjustable Problem?

Gillette – Super Adjustable Problem?

I need some help/advice from some of the Gillette vintage experts.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Gillette “super adjustable” razor. At first it seemed to work fine and I was happy with it. But recently the upper part of the handle that you grip when turning the bottom part of the handle to open & close the razor doors spins and keeps me from snuggly closing “barn-doors”, and keeps me from doing the quarter turn to lock the blade in position . I can make it work only by holding the head of the razor by the ends (not the sides where the blade is exposed). I hate doing this because sooner, or later it seems likely that I will slip and cut myself.

So my questions are:

-Is this problem fixable, or am I just out of luck with this particular razor and should scrap it?

-Does this problem potentially keep the blade gap from being adjusted properly when using the 1-9 settings so that I will get inconsistent setting results?

-Is this a common problem with the “super adjustable” model (if so it is kind of disappointing)? Will I likely have the same problem if I buy another one, and maybe I should just avoid this model altogether?

Please advise on the above,

Dave Deluxe

I don't know how to answer all of you questions, but I got a Super Adjustable in a lot of razors, and it had the same issue. On mine, it definitely effected the blade gap, as the handle not only spun, but would move up and down. Honestly, if you are going to go with a Gillette adjustable, I'd get a nickel plated Slim; much better craftsmanship than the later models.

I haven't used mine in awhile, but I have one (70s NOT with the plastic baseplate) and it has never had that issue. The 60s slim adjustables are good razors too, I found it shaved basically the same as the super. You may want to try one of those if decide to replace the razor. Not sure if it is fixable or not, honestly, as I don't know much about fixing razors.

Mine is also having that problem too, at least some of the time (the moving up & down).

My "super adjustable" is a metal bottom model too. I also have a "slim", but kind of like the longer handle of the "super adjustable", but if it is going to be problematic I may need give up on it.
