Gillette Slim - surface cleaning

Hi!
I have a cleaning problem with my Slim. It is just gray and looking sad all the time, no matter what I use for cleaning it.
My experience with shining up old razors is quite a lot, but this one just don't want to shine for me.
So, please tell me - what do you use for cleaning your Slim and make it shine ?

I have one Slim that is different from all my other adustables for the same reason. It's slightly more grey than the others. It's clean but it's just dull. I've tried polishing it, using a brass brush on the knurling and it's still just grey looking. Other than that, it's a great razor. Maybe I'll replate it someday.

Yes, I'm afraid of that the replating is the only solution, unless someone here found the elixir for putting a new life to our Slim(s) :c9:

I like a shiny razor as much as the next guy, but if it shaves well, does it really matter? Maybe if you thought of it as you might an old used car, not a collector's model, that still drives as well as you need it to. Enjoy it for what it does well. Maybe its role is to make all your other razors look better by comparison.

If you have used non abrasive metal polishes (Fitz, MAAS, semichrom, wenol) and it is still dull you have pretty much done all you can do outside of replating.

As a last resort, if you have access to a high speed buffing wheel, you can gently apply Tripoli followed by a water soluble red rouge. The wheel should turn about 7,500 RPM for buffing. Be sure to use eye protection. Be careful to use extremely light pressure with the Tripoli because it will eat away the plating if you have a heavy hand. I would advise testing on a junk razor. Remove the buffing compound residue with a toothbrush and dish detergent under hot water. Followup with a cream metal polish and a soft rag buff. Your Slim should really shine once again.

Well... yesterday, at the local supermarket, I was looking after a kind of cleaning agent for pots and pans. A lady from aside recommended me some "Shine" stuff in a bottle and here is the result.
I'm impressed !

I wonder if you can buy this in the U.S. ? Seeing the O.P. is in Copenhagen. But ..... I would like to know also !

Come on ! Give up this magic elexir you speak of !!

Well, until I met this lady in my local supermarket, I used to polish my razors in the "HG steel polish" (on the left). I used to lubricate them with it and let it dry. Then I polished them with a synthetic fibres cloth. It worked well.
BUT THIS ! WOW !
"Shine" is also a dutch product, produced in Holland by "Van Dam Bodegraven BV" for a danish company "Dansk Supermaked A/S".
I covered the Fatboy and the Slim with it, let it work for about 20-30 min., brushed intensively with a soft tooth brush, rinsed, polished with a soft cloth and here we are ...
PS.: I've never seen products like "Fitz" or "MAAS" in danish stores.

I have a Dremel, but I never dared to use it to polish my razors. I'm afraid of hurting my razors and myself :001_smile

Howdy, Howdy, my friend !
I've got it in a Netto on Frederikssundsvej

Tak. There are a couple of Nettos in Viborg. Thanks for the tip. Along with a couple of black beauties, I too have a fatboy and a slim. Both looking a little drab.

I just dropped my Gillette slim off for resurfacing this afternoon. Dropped it at Reliable Electroplating. I decided to do it in Gold (with lacquer on top for durability) in honor of James Bond using that model in the movie Goldfinger. I figured the gold plating would be suitable considering the movie plot. In the same trip, I dropped my Fatboy off for a Rhodium finish. Can't wait to get them back and post pics!

I have a replated Fat Handled Tech. It is beautiful, but the soul is gone :em18:
