Was at an antique store today and saw a Gillette razor in its original case. After looking through the site it looks like it was a 1908 Gillette. Question is the razor was dark gray, almost black. Does that mean it's a silver coated razor that is heavily tarnished, or something else? Price was $35 so I didn't get it. Might get it if it would polish up nicely. Wish I had gotten the serial number.

Without pictures, it's hard to say.
It could be an Gillette ABC Pocket Edition, it could be silver, it could be a knock off, it could be an old type. Or it could have been one of the rare gunmetal ABC Pocket Editions.
Single-ring could be any Gillette razor from 1906 on.

Looks just like the razor and case in this post in the BST. It did have a blade holder as well.

The Single Ring I bought was black as the Ace of Spades. That's what silver plate does over time.
It is pretty easy to clean up, and the silver plate razors look beautiful when they are shined up.
Tarnx dip for 10 seconds, rinse in cold running water, repeat till clean.
DON'T overdo the dipping for longer periods, it can be harmful.
Be prepared for the god awful rotten egg smell of the sulfur in the tarnish as it changes back.
It is pretty easy to clean up, and the silver plate razors look beautiful when they are shined up.

If it looked like that and was in that box, chances are that it's a silver plated Old Style and just needs cleaning and polishing.
If the blade holders are the same as in the set shown below (on the left), they're probably original to the case and razor.

Looks exactly like the set in the bottom left. Only one blade holder though, the top spot was occupied by some old blades (no case, but included). Still deciding if it's worth the 35 bucks or not...
If you do buy it, check out this thread on a Bulldog for a great way to get rid of the black without damaging the silver. Scroll down to AsylumGuido's post on cleaning (13th post in the thread if you are using linear mode).
