Gillette Rocket: what am I doing wrong?

Yesterday I had a nicely close shave with my "brand new" Gillette HD Rocket, combined with a new Red Personna. I had a very smooth result with two WTG passes (not BBS, but very passable). However, in the afternoon, I started feeling razor burn, so I concluded that I might have applied to much pressure after all (looking back, the Kruidvat alchohol based after shave could play a role in that as well).

Today I used the Rocket again, with the same blade. This time I made very sure that I applied absolutely zero pressure, and took notice of the blade angle all time (short and slow strokes). Again two WTG passes, and the result is far less close than yesterday. Worse; instead of cutting through the stubble on my chin, the razor kept catching each time. I just didn't get a smooth gliding shave.

My background: I have been wet shaving for 30 years, most of it with a Trac II cartridge. A month ago, I switched to a Mühle R89 razor. Both the Trac II and the Mühle give me perfect and effortless shaves (with the Mühle having the slight edge). So I think I do have some basic technique in lathering and shaving. I used the same brush and soap that I always use, and that always have given me great results.

I had expected a difference, and need for some adjustment, with the Gillette (my first vintage razor). But not this much; this morning it felt like a dull Trac II cartridge instead of a real razor. In contrast, yesterday I had a very fine shave (but I am sure that I handled the razor less cautiously then).

So ... what am I doing wrong? Am I applying too little pressure with this new razor? Is this the wrong blade / razor combination for me? I think that I would get a very close shave again if I would handle the Gillette like my Mühle (that is, holding the handle between my fingertips, but deliberately guiding the razor). However, I thought that a heavy razor should do all the work for you. Does it really only work with super sharp blades?

Not giving up on the Gillette yet, though ... yesterday's result was too promising :001_smile

Try a different blade. Oddly enough this was my problem with the rocket I had with a Gillette silver blue blade. After a several weeks with it in my line up with couple blade changes in this razor I found no improvement in shave quality. For me anyway. It found a new home.

Definitely suggest try a different blade. I tried a Red in my Gillette Redtip today and it tore my neck up. But, when I use Astra SP's I get pretty close to a BBS every time. Some razors just work better with certain blades I guess.

The red Personnas are good smooth blades, very similar to German Wilkinson swords but they do work best in a more aggressive razor for me like a Futur.

Sounds like you should try a sharper blade, I would suggest a Jilet Astra, Green SP or Blue SS. They both work great for me in a British flare tip Rocket.

Going to get a few Astra SP's from a friend. If they work better (and best, if they work in the R89 as well), then I am going to order 100 in bulk.

I definitely can use up my current Personna Reds in the R89, since that is a good combination for me.

i have used the rocket hd with astras and wilkinson sword blades with good results, a change of blade may be all thats needed, the rocket hd is a fairly heavy tto so a light touch will help,i recently got a hold of some pessona blades, i will need to give them a go in the hd to see how they go, the other razors i used the personna blades in i found them to be great blades, i used them in a 47 aristocrat and an edwin jagger de89.

I did use a very light touch today, but the problem was that the Rocket/Personna just did not want to cut through the stubble on my chin and under the nose.

The first shave (with the same touch as I use with the R89) went very smooth, but resulted in skin burn a few hours later. Which is exactly why I backed off on the second shave.

I've had a simaler experiance with the Personna Reds in my Fat handle Tech. The first shave was great, but I got to the 3rd and started getting burn. I think I'll try an Astra in it next.

Good to know I'm not alone!

Today's shave was best so far. One WTG pass, one XTG, and I have a very close shave without cuts or weepers. I was a bit less cautious today, but took more note of the blade angle (the Gillette head is very different from the Mühle head I am used to). I must add that for me, the 3rd and 4th shave with a Personna Red blade always are the best at well.

I'm looking forward to trying the Rocket with an Astra ... see if that can calm it's Heavy Duty nature :wink2:

If you've only been DE shaving for a month, you're doing fine. Just be patient and accept that the learning curve hasa few backwards steps in it to keep you on your toes.

Yes, I have ... but I have wet shaved with a Trac II for years. And the R89 immediately felt at home with me.

The Rocket clearly has a bigger learning curve. But today's shave is incredibly smooth in two passes (I need three passes with a R89 to get the same result).

Since I didn't have any weeper at all with the Rocket in the past days, I decided to stay with it for now. It's obviously a very good razor, but more aggressive than I am being used to.

I think my blade angle is too steep (the head of the Rocket is shaped very differently than the R89, which also means that I must hold the handle in another angle towards my face). That steep angle leads to very sharp stuble, and that causes the irritation after a couple of hours.

The Mühle is very forgiving for ex-cartridge razors in many ways, it seems, one being the shape of the head. The Rocket is something entirely different!

Today I used the shallowest angle possible, and I did one pass only. I'm left with more stubble now, but hopefully also without irritation in the afternoon.

The only time I have had catching, was with EJ soap or a clogged razor. What soap you using?
Palmolive and De Vergulde Hand soaps ... I've been using these for years, without problems.

Edit: I am positive that my problem was that I was holding the Rocket like a Mühle R89. That results in a way too steep angle. The Gillette demands a much shallower angle. I don't think the blades or razor are the problem; I just have to learn how to use them.

Edit2: yesterday's and today's shave confirmed this. The Gillette demands an angle much more parallel to the floor than the R89. Shaves are fine now.

Problem solved :001_smile

Pressure and mostly angle ... it's shaving perfectly well now.

Amazingly, even despite my clumsy handling on the first days, the Rocket has not given me a single cut or weeper. That's actually impressive!

Been reading this with interest! I'm lying in bed using my android tablet. I'm just about to get up and shave with my Gillette Rocket HD which arrived yesterday. Hope it's a good shave!

I hope you'll enjoy it. I like mine very much! Combined with Personna Reds, it gives me a very close shave, with no cuts or irritation at all.
