Gillette Red Tip

I have had my Red Tip for 8+ months. I took it to be refinished, I repainted the red with testors model paint & I baked it in the oven for 4 hours at 200°.
I never shaved with it though......until tonight!
Unreal, fantastic,awesome shave!View attachment 361393

Hi,

They do shave nicely. I used one for years for first pass, followed by an EarlyTech for second, and sometimes a Blue tipnfor third if I wanted BBS.

Until I found this place. Then I get to finding other things. Now the Red Tip sits.....

Nice job refinishing the red tip, it looks new. I have a B2 1956 but it doesn't look as good as yours.

My Red Tip should be arriving by the end of the week or early next week. Looking forward to shaving with it considering its high praise. By the way Bk124tt, yours looks great. How did you go so long without using it?

Nice! I have a red tip coming in that will need some touch up on the tip. Do you remember which testors model paint you used? What is the point of baking it in the oven?

Thanks!

I don't own any Superspeeds but if I was to get one I would probably get a 40's one, there is just something I don't like about paint on razors, I just prefer the look of metal. there doesn't seem to be anyone with a bad word to say about those red tips though!

I have way to many razors is how! Not a bad problem to have I guess! :)

I custom blended the bright red in the "model pack" with black while staring at a picture of one.

I hadn't used my red tip for a year or more, feeling it too aggressive and always getting nicked. I decided to give it another try. Loaded a PoliSilver, Mikes Lavender, and went to town. Awesome shave, on small nick that immediately ceased.

I have always loved the weight and handle diameter of the red tip...looks a little evil. It's now back in regular rotation.

No need to mix Testors paints Krylon Burgundy is a dead on match.
Had one Red Tip (56)with a real sad looking tip and another(57)with a few small chips here and there after I redid the 56 you could set the two next to each other and only the NOS gleam gave the the 56 away as a repaint.

Don't hold me to this without doing a little home work yourself but while I did not bake the razor I did do a metal steam locomotive kit some years ago and want to say it had to be baked on at about 150 for 45 min or so and that was a pot metal body.

The red tip is a solid piece of metal, which is why I love it! It slices through my pretty thick beard with almost any blade loaded like a katana. It does tear up my neck a bit, and for that I blame myself, not the razor.

I wish mine looked as nice as yours! I have an ebay find (can't complain for 15$ shipped) with some plate loss/paint loss. But atleast now I know, without asking anyway, a good way to re-paint the red tip if I ever feel adventurous.

Thanks for the Rtip compliments gents! Locally I have a shop that dips metals and redcoats them in certain desired metals. I took both my red tip and blue tips there and repainted the tips with testors.
the baking was some advice given to me here on B&B. I thinks it really helps the paint become "one" with/ on the metal.

The Red Tip is one of my favorite razors. I can't recall ever having a bad shave out of it yet. The refinishing and repainting look great.

I don't often shave with my Red Tip. Haven't had it all that long. It does a great job and isn't as aggressive as it's made out to be. If I had to, I could live with a Red Tip as the only razor. Glad I don't have to do that.

There may be better razors than the Red Tip.

But not many.

It is a solid little shaver, no doubt about it.

Thanks for the help guys! I will be sure to post pics after I'm done. I'm seeing that baking think successive layers of enamel paint helps harden it, but that it can be tricky... maybe I'll forego that! If i have a whole bottle or can of paint touchups should be simple.

I didn't bake mine after enameling them, but i did leave them a few weeks before i used them so the paint didnt chip.

The model paint i used were different, details in the gallery pic.

I had one, sold it after one bad shaving experience with it. Wish I hadn't have done that, at least without trying another blade in it. It just feels good in your hand, just the right heft to it.
