Gillette Red Tip Versus Gillette New

Good morning everyone, I'm very new to wet shaving with a double edge razor, I recently bought a red tip and I tried it out with a beard growth of four days, I have to say that the red tip is not as aggressiveness as people think it is. I took one stroke down my cheek with the red tip and left almost all the hair where it was, so I put a new blade in the Gillette new and took one stroke down the other cheek the razor left no hair at all… Maybe Gillette short of quit making razors after they came out with the NEW! I'm going to continue shaving with the Gillette New razor, in my opinion it gives a much better shave… Al Newman

When I'm talking about them with folks I always emphasize that the Red Tip is aggressive for a Super Speed. They're not very aggressive on the scale of all razors ever made, in fact I'd say that they're actually fairly close to the middle of the range. If I were lining it up against the adjustment range of a Fatboy, for example, just based on my own subjective experience I'd say that the Blue Tip would be somewhere around a 2 or 3, the standard Flare Tip about a 4, and the Red Tip around a 5 or 6.

You don't want to get me started about the excellence of the NEW, though...

The Red-Tip seems aggressive to me but I have a soft beard. I still like it it shaves a bit better than my SS. I'm still trying to get the hang of it.

I'm lightbearded and must say my redtip +shaves very close to my British rocket flaretip. Really good that is!

Most Super Speeds are fairly mild and forgiving. My favorite SS is the 1940s style. However, nothing beats a NEW !

New will shave closer, I believe.

But, for those who prefer TTO, get a Slim. Why be limited to ONE aggressiveness when you can have 9 levels? :)

Al; When you said four days of growth, that's where the Gillette NEW open comb shines! I know from experience. It's possible that the closed comb red tip would work fine on 1 or 2 days growth. My only superspeed is a black handle which is milder than your red tip. I haven't used it since I bought it in 1967; too mild for me.

Hi,

On 4 days of growth, my New LC would do much better than my Red Tip. But, to really whack 4 days off, I would go to Grandpa's Old Type. :001_tt1:

They are both in my favorite category. You could try a 2013 Muhle R-41. Less aggressive than the previous model. Love mine also love my red tip and the New!

Do they have silver tone News? I really do not like yellow/gold toned razors

Look on mr-razor website; I count 4 News made in U.S.A. that are chrome: Belmont, Big Boy, Deluxe Norfolk and Norfolk. There are others made in England. Might be some in silver.

As far as American manufacture, yes, there were some nickel-plated standard NEWs made. They're not terribly common, but they are out there. Also, as Mike mentioned just above there were NEW DeLuxes in chrome.

If you look to the other side of the pond, though, you have a bunch more options. The NEWs made in the British factory were much more commonly silver plated and later nickel. It's actually somewhat uncommon to run into a gold-plated razor from this era made in England. Sets like this one of Achim's below are pretty easy to come by without breaking the bank:
