What's new

gillette president

i wonder if anyone who has the president and the us 47 aristocrat can tell me if they shave the same, the us aristo is one of my favourite shaving razors, the president looks the same only its rhodium /nickel and looks classier, but does it shave as good as the aristo.

i thought it was a better overall shaver with its weight compared to the Aristocrat, but it really depends on the person and how they perceive it.
The only way to know is to try one, unfortunately, as you will never know until you try one. See if you can find a user grade one if you are concerned about the price.
Good luck.

I have found the '47 Aristocrat to be a little milder than my '53 President. I prefer the slightly more aggressive President. Both of mine are very good condition user grade razors.

cheers guys, will need to try and get one, i missed out on a few user grade ones , will just need to keep my eyes open, the mint ones seem to go for big bucks.

What's up guys. Never was a fan of my Gillette president. Was my grandfathers razor. He never used it I've had it for for about 15 years. The thing is so nice I never wanted to touch it not a scratch on it no where I shaved with it a few times and to be honest I wasn't impressed at all. Been using de razors since I was 12 years old I'm 41 now. Tried just about every de razor out there. Vintage and new. Adjustables , slants , gilettes , merkur , feather all stainless , gem , ever ready , shick , etc .... The list goes on and on. My fat boy on 9 with a feather just about gets the job done merkur progress , futur , cranked up are more aggressive that the fat boy. Anyhow .... I had one Astra blade which I'm not a Astra guy. I Use feather or Kai blades. And no they aren't scary sharp. They are a good sharp de blade. Which is what you want .... Isn't it ? I loaded up the president with the Astra blade and just used good ol fashioned barbasol ... No brush , no pre shave , no mug , etc. I could not believe what a close smooth shave I just got. The best shave I've ever had. Anyone with a president try a Astra blade. I think it works perfect for this razor. Mind you if it weren't my grandfathers razor I would have sold it. I could probably get $200-250 easily. I guess experiment around with some different blades before you vote no on any razor. It looks like my grandfathers razor will be my everyday shaver. :)

Beautiful story and beautiful pictures. Thanx for sharing.

I understand your President equates with a late '40's and early 50's Aristocrat, the difference being gold versus nickel. I have a 1950 Aristocrat and I can vouch for the quality of the razor and the shave. I will try an Astra blade one day soon.

The handle of the President is rhodium, only the head is nickel.

Beautiful razor, congrats!

They are pretty much the same beyond the gold plating vs rhodium. The handle on the president is rhodium the head is nickel Try either one with a Astra blade. Awesome shave. I just started a post about my president. I wasn't impressed at all until today.

The handle looks like jewelry. Really the nicest razor ever made imo. And I'm not saying that because I own it. I actually would think. Dam this thing looks so nice but shaves just so so. I would have sold it years ago if it weren't my grandfathers. Do I think they are with the $ ? Demand is high supply is scarce = $$$. Lol

Try the Astra .... My beard is as tough as nails. I'm a daily shaver no matter what I could probably shave with a piece of flint like the cavemen did. Lol. But give it a try.
