Gillette President - What is a decent price?

I know this is a subjective question but I'm looking for opinions from the guys in the know.

What would be a reasonable offer for a cased Gillette President? The razor is in excellent condition. The outside of the case has issues. I do not want to insult the seller nor do I want to sell myself short. I'd like to be fair and reasonable.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

For a buyer, a reasonable price would be around $100-$125. Do you know the seller and does the seller have an idea of the value of the razor and case? I'd probably start by offering $80 and go from there.

I wouldn't call him a friend, kind of a friend of an acquaintance. We met a a gathering and somehow got on the subject of razors and wet shaving, etc... so I'd have to believe he knows the value.

That should be my hint that he knows which end is up.

I'd start at around $80 then and see where it goes. Prices of all razors have softened somewhat in the last few weeks. I think if the razor is in excellent condition and you get it for less than $100, you've done very well.

I assumed a President went for well over $150 if the razor itself was in near mint condition. of course, if the case was also in near mint condition that might raise the price. but what do I know? i'd love to own a President someday but have always assumed it was out of my price range...as in $250+

I just bought a mint one off of the BST for $150

the case is a little worn but not terrible. it has a blade case, and instructions as well. but the razor--in all honesty--looks as though I must be the first person to have used it.

Saw one on Ebay today.. briefly. Seller ended the listing before anyone bid on it. I imagine someone sent a PM to the seller and made an offer, which is technically against Ebay's rules so unethical on the part of the seller and the buyer.. but how would they know, you know?

I saw that one too, even had a bid on it - MINE! Got an email that said this:

"The bid that you entered for the item has been cancelled. You can view the reason provided for the cancellation by selecting the (bid history) link from the individual item page"

Here's the "reason": "This item has ended." Didn't think that was legal on the 'bay, but then what do I know.

Yes, as long as there's more than 12 hours left in an auction, a seller can end an auction and cancel all bids. Likewise, a bidder can cancel their bids up to 12 hours left. If the seller did so to make a sale from a messaged offer, THAT is against the rules. But again, how would Ebay know?

Unfortunately I think this happens far too often. As a seller I've definitely got these emails before and just respond that I let auctions run as it is against eBay rules to end early. I just won a Vintage Yardley NIB soap on eBay UK where the seller actually posted a question from a potential buyer asking to buy the soap outright for 25 pounds shipped. Thought it was kind of funny to post that for all to see and his response was that is against the rules. Won the auction for about 30 pounds. Happy he let it run it's course.

Update, he sold it to someone else for $200. Well, I guess I wasn't even in the running.

Hmm, if that one is near mint, the buyer must have had long range x-ray super vision, all I see is a pretty nice case, razor in Very Good condition. Maybe the extra is for the soap scum underneath the blade tray? No whiskers though that I can see

As they say, there's a sucker...

So (anyone), what's a good price for a better than shaver grade, say a VG or VG+, condition Prez with no case? Fifty to sixty bucks? Then maybe $100-120 with a case?

You are probably in the right ballpark, but as my friend from OZ pointed out earlier the market does move around. Just saw one in case go on EBay for $160 in what looked like VG/Ex condition, with blades (they are not a big deal on razors of that vintage) and instructions for $160.

Yep, the same seller sold one for $200 and then $160 on consecutive days. They both looked nice, but a little pricey.

I purchased one about six months ago on the B/S/T for $65. Sold it for the same a few months later and bought a pristine one (no case) for $100.

As they said...the market moves around somewhat. If you post a WTB on the B/S/T and then take a look at your offers, you'll get a feel for the "market window"

I bought that one! then I managed to buy a case for it, but it's a Diplomat case that was stuffed with a Super Speed, not El Presidente's natural home, but close enough for a _brassed_ razor.
